Batman

The Penguin put a listening device in an umbrella that Batman and Robin took back to the Batcave. First of all, the Penguin didn't start listening to what was going on until the second episode. It's a good thing he didn't because, in the first episode, Batman and Robin had a conversation with Alfred that the Penguin surely should have overheard had he been listening. Secondly, Batman didn't find out about the listening device until episode two which seems to be an oversight on his part. Shouldn't the Batcave, of all places, have anti-bugging devices considering how often they take evidence there? Even the Penguin had enough foresight to protect his hideout from being bugged!

Warden Crichton explains that he puts a video camera in the special cell to determine the extent to which an inmate is reformed. When the videotape is viewed in the Commissioner's office, it shows the Penguin is plotting to commit more crimes. First of all, did Warden Crichton even watch the tape before releasing the Penguin? He seems disappointed at the Penguin's attitude when viewing it in the Commissioner's office - as though he hadn't seen it before then. What is the point of going to the expense and trouble of trying to determine an inmate's state of mind at release if you do not use those resources? Secondly, after Robin comments that he's surprised the Penguin was released with that attitude, Commissioner Gordon chastizes him by reminding him that the Penguin's sentence was up and should have been released, regardless of his lack of remorse. If that's the case, the video cameras are, once again, a waste of time and money. The Penguin showed a clear intent to resume his criminal ways and was still released; attempts at reformation clearly hadn't worked for him.

Burgess Meredith and Cesar Romero were both the most frequent "guest villains" as The Penguin and the Joker, respectively. In fact, whenever Meredith was in town the producers had a script waiting for him. He had given up smoking for years when he was cast in the role of The Penguin. The squawk in his voice came from the way the cigarette smoke affected his lungs and throat.

David Lewis's first appearance as Warden Crichton. Lewis previously worked on the other side of the fence in his portrayal as crime boss Otto Danzig in the 1962 movie Kid Galahad starring Elvis Presley.

Mickey Rooney was considered for the role of The Penguin.
