Batman in the Basement-This was one of my old time favorite cartoons... It had all the best voice actors, and was the first to have the kids be the hero to batman in this episode. Would have loved to see more work from the character Roberta she had such a sweet voice...Definitely a great collectors item…..family classic. I think this was the most original cartoon of them all. I think it brings out the child in us. Because for the first time we can dream about helping batman. I could picture myself right there feeling every emotion roberta and her brother felt when they realized Batman was in THEIR basement....TRUELY AMAZING!!!!!

A very poor introduction for the Penguin, 10 year old kids fighting as sidekicks from batman. Yiieeeaaak. Batman Fighting Penguin With a Screwdriver?????!!!!! stop kidding, please. I think it maybe the worst episode from Batman: The Animated Series. For a great character like the penguin, with his excellent episodes like Blind as a Bat and Birds of Prey...this is an insult for his name. OMG. I won't be watching that episode for at least 50 years... or more. Batmn being unconscius maybe half episode was weard, becuase two little boys and girls must take the deal with penguin...(?). And the older brother from that kid...No comments. Horrible.
  • Good but too childish

Batman is knocked out by Penguin's nerve-gas and two kids have to hind him in their basement so that Penguin doesn't find them. I find the plot alright but it was way way way way way way way way way too childish! The dialog was 5-year-old interpretable, the children looked to be at least 10 but were acting 4 and Penguin seemed kinda OOC here. If you're recommending episodes to a friend who has never seen Batman The Animated Series and he isn't much of a Batman fan, don't recomment "I've Got Batman in my Basement" or your friend will be turned off of to Batman forever.
  • Far from the best, but not a horrible episode. With Batman knocked out it is up to a group of kids to beat back the Penguin.

The best way to sum up this episode is Saturday morning fare; light hearted and kid friendly. Batman catches the Penguin stealing a rare jeweled egg, however he is knocked out by a puff of gas from the Penguin's trademark umbrella. Batman is rescued by Sherman and Roberta, a pair of ten year olds who hide Batman in the basement of Sherman's house. Now here begins the silliness. The kids must now deal with a poisoned superhero, a supervillian with a bird obsession, and somehow get rid of both and return the egg before Sherman's mother cames home. Probably the biggest weak point of this episode comes from the fact Batman is out of commission and it is up to a bunch of kids to save him and defeat the Penguin. While Batman is a human superhero and has to rescued himself on occasion, for the rescuers to be kids is out of place for the series. On top of that they were able to access his utility belt and Batmobile, two items known to have very sophisticated security systems that have kept out Batman's adult villains. And the fact this takes place in the middle of a suburban neighborhood without anyone knowing is without logic, especially when the kids initially take on the Penguin and his goons and nearly destroy the house in the process.

While overall a not a good episode, it redeems itself in it's light hearted nature.
  • unrealistic in a batman universe kind of way

we all enjoy the fact that this is a very "human" superhero. but in this episode those kids got too close. and there are some goofs. at one point the little boy says to batman: "this is my crime lab. it's not exactly the bat cave". i mean isn't the batcave somewhat of a secret. as peculiar was to me the way those older kids managed to find, enter and use the bat mobile. not a bad episode. but not one of the best
  • Worst episode yet!

Where do i began? Okay first off the only good part was the beginning when some crook is stealing some diamond or jewel but the rest was seriously aweful and to think i thought it was bad when i was only 12(how's that for good taste?)! I love Batman just as much as the next guy but this episode SUCKED!The writers must have been sleep-walking when doing this episode and this show is "off-the-chain" but the episode was horrid! And i think at one point(near the end, in the basement with Batman half-recovered)Batman was actually fighting Penguin with a SCREW-DRIVER! OMG! What in the world will they think of next?!? Well to sum it all up if i had a friend who hated and despised Batman(which i do)and he was curious to give an episode a shot,i would NOT recommend this one and infact would be plum embarrased by this episode!
  • Simple, uncomplex plot that's a little different to all the others. Two young children follow a vulture to the Penguin's hideout where they witness the Penguin knock Batman out, they rescue Batman and hide him in their basement.

This episode had certainly suffered from a lot of critiscm from fans of the Batman series, claiming it to be completely different from the others with a poor script and story. The episode certainly DOES have some flaws and it is by no means Batman at its best. However, it is not entirely awful, and is certainly forgivable, and some of the things said against this episode are unjust. It is a cute episode aimed at younger viewers as the protagonists are actually children battling the Penguin and his clumsy henchfolk. Many of the other Batman episodes are completely unlike this, and so it is not surprising that many fans were appalled, being used to the darker, more serious and disturbing episodes, but there can be no denial that this episode has some very good and unique ideas, such as Batman being unconcious for the duration of the thing and the Penguin being thwarted by young detectives. This may not be a popular idea, but it is definately an unusual one and at least an attempt at something new. The plot, while not ingenius, is perfect for young children to watch. It's not complicated, it's not difficult to understand, perfect. Batman is unconscious and so has to be rescued and protected from the Penguin who is planning to steal a precious egg-ornament. Doesn't sound very interesting for die-hard Batman fans, but I repeat, for children this is just fine. As for the characters, they are all pretty bland. The children are just typical children from kids' adventure movies and the two crooks are just typical, clumsy hooligans. Batman is good while he is around, but for most of it he is unconscious, but he is in character, although I hardly think he'd be beaten by knockout gas. The Penguin, however, is superb. A wonderful re-designing of a fabulous villain who is more interesting than the British businessman of the comics and less vulgar and grotesque than the Danny DeVito version, and is a great mixture between the two, and I love his new look. His voice is excellent, with comedic elements with a note of menace added, and it cannot be denied that he is a despicable villain and he is evidently murderous as he attempts to tear Batman to pieces with his umbrella. Basically, 'I've Got Batman in my Basement' is not a great Batman episode, but not a bad one either. It is a good one that kids will love and there are many worse things on TV. Because of the flaws that bring this down and the pros that push it up, I will give this episode a 6.8.
  • Batman is knocked out by Penguine\'s nerve gas and brought to the baasement of two ameture detectives.

I thought this episode of Batman the Animated Series was a refreshing change. I love the way you get to see Batman\'s interaction with the children. Two children who are approximately 10 years old, are self appointed detectives. Sherman and Reberta. They are picked on by two neighborhood bullies, although these bullies are not your average hoods, they bug Sherman enough to be a pain. Sherman recieves a detective kit and decides to get away from the bullies\' teasing so he and Reberta take off for a change of venue. They end up at a warehouse where the Batman is fighting the Penguine and ultimately saved from being flattened. After getting sprayed and rendered incompacitated, the children jump in the Batmobile with Batman just as he passes out and try to start up and run the vehicle to get rid of the penguine and his goons as they jump on the mobile and try to gain access inside. This is a hillarious part where Sherman and Reberta kick some major butt together with Sherman at the wheel and Reberta at the pedals. I laughed out loud many times in this episode.
  • The Penguin, a couple of goons, and a giant vulture steal an egg. When Batman is rendered unconscious by Penguin's gas, the kids take him home and hide him in their basement. It's all predictably ridiculous from there.

    "Terrible"
This is an absurd episode with a bad villain and a worse plot. It all starts when Penguin's henchmen steal a glowy faberge egg. When Batman catches them in the act, a giant vulture appears to help them make their escape.

Then a couple of kids, Sherman and Roberta, see the vulture flying over Gotham and follow it back to Penguin's lair. Are they seriously the only ones who noticed? The rest of Gotham's population must be blind.

The episode continues in an obvious direction. Batman gets the egg back from Penguin, saves the kids from their own stupidity, and then gets knocked out with Penguin's gas. The kids save him, have some fun with the Batmobile, and take Batman home (hence the title).

What follows is some Home Alone-style action after Penguin tracks them down. Then comes an unintentionally comical duel between Batman and Penguin, as though the rotund Pengy could move fast enough to pose a threat even to a dazed Batman. Batman wins, Penguin goes to jail, boring, boring, boring.

Then Batman meets Sherman's mom and moves in -- in Sherman's dreams, anyway. Oh, and the kids who were bullying Sherman at the start of the episode become his loyal flunkies.

In summation, this is a shallow wish-fulfilment episode that only ten-year-old boys could enjoy. Maybe that is BTAS' target audience, but it has attracted a much wider viewership than that -- no thanks to this episode, which is below BTAS' high standards.
  • batman is rendered hlepless by the Pneguin\'s knockout gas and is aided by young crime fighters.

    "Perfect"
Not only does this episode contain one of my favorite villains, the Penguin, but the story is well written and the episode moves along very nicely. Unlike the Joker, who is often overemphasized, the Penguin is a much more debonair and complex villain. One gets the sense that he has motivations that he keeps hidden, much in the smae way as batman. The way the children help batman is interesting because the writers never cross the line to onbelievable. It is very easy to see the curious children following the vulture and stumbling upon the criminal, though it is slightly hard to believe that his security is so lax. minor flaws aside, this episode is stunning and shoul;d appeal to all batman fans.
  • Easily the series worst

    3.8
    "Bad"
This episode is hands down, the worst episode so far , the premise of The Penguin and his goons being outsmarted by two kids is a terrible to the extent that the likes of the 60s Batman would never touch it. Basicly Batman gets knocked out by The Penguins gas (why has this never happened to him before?). He is then rescued by two children who take him to their basement and procede to beat the Penguin. And Batman fencing The Penguin with a screwdriver doesn't help much either. It is such a shame that this monstrocity is the episode that was chosen to introduce the character of The Penguin. On his first appearance in the show he is beaten by children, he deserves better than this.
  • A horrible episode. It doesn\'t seem like the same show.

    "Abysmal"
Hard to write a review of any length for this episode, because it is so bad it doesn\'t seem like it is worth it. This episode is 100% out of sync with the rest series. This episode is not the dark, serious and mature vision of the Batman mythos that makes up this series. This episode seems like it a belongs to a generic, plain, run-of-the-mill, ordinary childern\'s cartoon; Batman: The Animated Series is not normally like this.

The plot is juneville, the writing is barely functional, the Penguin and Batman seem out of character. It is difficult to watch.

Very small children might like this episode. It is brighter and simpler than any other episode in the series. It also has a lot of \"action\" (albeit completlly boring, tedious, pointless, and silly action).
  • Like watching a completely different show

The writers do the best they can with a terrible concept - the Penguin tries to get a priceless jeweled egg back from an unconcious Batman who's being protected by a pack of ten year olds. It runs about as bad as it sounds, and my initial viewing was based on staring at my screen aghast that such a high-quality series could be capable of such a horrible addition. A shame that this was the Penguin's first episode - poor guy gets clobbered by unarmed half-pints. The series never got this bad again, fortunately. Perhaps they burned all their bad ideas up in one episode.
