When Batman is in the virtual reality world, he sees a door that says "??RIDDLE??" but when he gets closer, the door now says "RIDDLE???"
Look Close: In the scene where Batman, Robin, and Comissiner Gorden are in the computer lab, we that in one shot Robin is in black and white.
(trying to determine the answer to a riddle involving 4 quarters and one penny) Batman: (remembering the Riddler's instruction) When you add it all up, it makes sense. Alfred: 'Cents' is also another term for money. Batman: Cent, red cent...copper! Alfred: And copper is another term for policeman. Batman: Police (looks at the 'heads' on the coins) head...quarters! Alfred: And 4 quarters and 1 penny equal 101 cents. Batman: Police Headquarters, room #101.
Batman: Where does a 500-pound gorilla sleep? What's worse than a millipede with sore feet? How do you fit five elephants into a car? Alfred: Wherever it wants, a giraffe with a sore throat, and two in the front, two in the back and one in the trunk.
Episode Villain(s): The Riddler
This episode is episode 20 on the Batman: The Animated Series Volume 2 DVD.
Look close: The first time Batman falls in the chestboard world, there is a shot of him in his usual color scheme. When he escapes the pitfall, he's back in the red and black virtual coloring.
Yellow Submarine The "corridor of doors" that Batman finds himself in strongly resembles the "pierhouse corridor" near the beginning of the Beatles cartoon movie Yellow Submarine. This is even more strongly reinforced when Batman opens one of the doors, and a train comes out, exactly as happened in the scene in Yellow Submarine.
The Riddler: No coaching from the peanut gallery. The peanut gallery is a theatre term for the highest tier of seats in the house. These seats are commonly the cheapest, and have historically attracted the rowdiest patrons, those most prone to throwing peanuts should something on stage fail to please them.
