According to the series bible, the villain framing Zatanna was originally the Gentleman Ghost, a foe that had originally been on the roster of recurring enemies along with Killer Croc and the Ventriloquist. Since he obviously didn't make the cut, they replaced him with a debenair one-timer.
When using playing cards to tell Bruce's fortune, Zatanna guesses wrong; Bruce had drawn the joker. Nonetheless, Wayne's future was inadvertantly and correctly predicted, since he would encounter the Clown Prince of Crime numerous times as the Batman.
Zatanna: You know, I have this little problem with money. Seems like it disappears before I even make it.
Zatanna: (to Batman) What do you care about some leggy dame in nylons? Or have I answered my own question?
Kane: Farewell, my dear Zatanna. We could have been... magic...
In one of the flashbacks, Bruce tells Zatanna that he has to leave for Japan, meaning that Bruce must have learned escape artistry from Zatanna's father before he trained with Sensei Yoru and Kyodai Ken in Japan.
In order to fit in the context of Batman The Animated Series, Zatanna's traditional magical abilities in this episode are downplayed. They were restored for her apperance in Justice League.
Zatanna is a longstanding character from DC comics who has been (at times) a member of the Justice League. Contrary to the magician in this episode, the comic Zatanna was an extremally powerful sorceress. Her father, Zatara, appeared in Action Comics #1, right after the first Superman story.
Dear John Letter
Zatanna's farewell letter to Batman holds a double meaning. First, it is a reference to the type of letters women write to their boyfriends to indicate the end of the relationship. Secondly and primarily, Zatanna had only known Bruce under the alias of John Smith.
Dr. M. Kane: Name
The antagonist for this episode has the surname of Kane, which is a nod to Batman co-creator Bob Kane.
