      • A precedent -- sad and unfortunate though it may be -- occurred behind the scenes on this one. "Walter's Rib" was originally scheduled to air on April 27, 2000. Apparently not expecting NBC to pull Battery Park off the air before its six-week run was over, Dreamworks sent out a screener tape to Academy voters pushing Henry Winkler for an Emmy for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Comedy Series. Then Battery Park got immediately cancelled like everything else NBC put on the air that year, it wasn't shown as scheduled and Dreamworks must have forgotten to share the wealth when Winkler surprisingly ended up with the nomination. Unfortunately, since the eligibility period for the 1999-2000 season ended on May 31, 2000, the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences soon discovered when this really did air. And like Winkler said after he was soon replaced on the ballots with sixth-place finisher William H. Macy, "The Lord giveth and the Lord taketh away." Maybe. If the Lord is NBC.

Winkler wasn't eligible to resubmit his performance for the 2000-2001 season either, because only one episode of the series aired during that calendar, not at least three as required by the rules. Of course, NBC had two additional, unaired episodes sitting in the can which would have, as Big Bird can tell you, amounted to three. But to broadcast them for Henry Winkler's cause would have involved things such as human compassion and consideration -- two traits we all know network executives do not compute. What would the Fonz have done in a situation like this?
