As a pilot is celebrating his 1000th landing, an accident kills thirteen pilots and injures seven more. Starbuck is charged with training new recruits, but the talent pool is pretty shallow. Haunted by her memories of Zak, and how she passed him improperly from basic flight, she flunks the new recruits after only one flight. Lee urges her however to give them a second chance and not let her personal feelings get in the way. He later lets it slip to Adama that she may have had something to do with Zak's death. Finally confessing to what happened to the Commander, he orders her to do her job and train the new pilots, before ordering her from his cabin angrily.
The president speaks to the doctor who tells her the breast cancer is too far along to operate. He recommends radiation but she refuses, opting instead for chamalla, an alternate healing method. The doctor, who doesn't believe in chamalla, eventually agrees to search for some.
Starbuck tries again to train the pilots, and appears to be enjoying some success before a group of Cylon Raiders discovers their location and attacks. Starbuck orders the new recruits back to the ship, but Hot Dog, an unfortunately named new recruit, breaks formation and helps her out before becoming disabled. Starbuck takes care of the remaining Raiders but her ship is damaged and begins spinning out of control towards a planet. She finally has to eject from the Viper. The episode closes with her plummeting towards the ground.
