Syfy (ended 2010)
One thing i wonder that maybe someone can help me with.
About the uploading thing when they came back to life, if Caprica Six uploaded her data when she died back in Caprica does that mean every Six likes Baltar?
Does the other Six's get upgraded even if they arent in a mothership? That cant be since Gina didnt know Baltar when he first met her.
I guess Baltar is going to take over the title of Most Beat Up Character on BSG. Or Most Tortured. I think Tigh is sharpening up his meat hooks for Baltar right now.
I hope this is not the case entirely. No matter how much an individual may "deserve" such treatment, that option is unacceptable and self-defeating in nearly every way possible. Beyond the obvious ethical issues, torture and abuse has been demonstrated as an unreliable method of extracting viable information. Also, actions such as these almost always come around to bite the perpetrators in the end, we need only to look at Abu Ghraib to learn from example. What may seem acceptable or expedient in the passion of the moment has the potential to provide justification for the other side, and create divisiveness within the side you are on.
While I am not advocating they roll out the red carpet for Baltar or treat him with kidskin gloves. The smart move would be to safeguard him from those who would savage him (a direction they are already taking by hiding his identity with the body-bag), and employing psychological methods to pump him for intel. Once drained of viable information, a quick show trial followed by an unceremonious walk out of the nearest airlock should await the scumbag.
Agreed, I didn't think for a moment that you were advocating torture, and I hope you did not interpret my post in that vein.
My only hope is that the writers take the opportunity to get some mileage out of the ethical dilemma posed by this part of the story line. Where does the need for intelligence gathering (and possibly retribution) end, and the madness of unbridled savagery begin?
Either way Baltar is in for a rough time before this is over.
I'm totally on the fence about this. James Callis is too good of an actor and his character is too valuable to write out of the show by having him executed. Baltar has given us a glimpse into the mind of a madman who can justify anything by manipulating not only everyone around him, but also his own conscience. So what to do with Baltar? If they run some current through him he will most likely retreat into his safe little fantasy island and the Caprica Six in his head will tell him all kinds of interesting things. The question remains: is she nothing more than a construct of his twisted Psyche, or is there some sort of true connection between them? If she really is communicating with him, then is she telling the truth?
Either way we'll only know for sure is when they finally punch his ticket for him and he downloads, or not. My guess is they will hold the moment of truth off as long as possible, and if he is executed, he will return as a Cylon.
I also have faith that the writers will strike a balance with the whole torture issue. I concur that the whole subject has been dealt with before so it would be pointless to go there again. But if they do (as the preview seems to indicate) then I hope cooler Colonial heads will quickly prevail, allowing us to visit other parts of this complex and interesting storyline.
According to the Roundtable podcast from Ronald Moore, James Callis will be around at least through the 2-part season finale. Whether that means he stays alive, or is executed and found to be a Cylon and resurrected isn't clear. In either case, he isn't being written off the show this season.
Baltar should end only when BSG does, he is too good of character and Callis is awesome. About torture, i hope they dont make a big deal out of i cause of what happened when the humans was controlled by cylon earlier this season. That shows this is war and you cant be too gentle on your enemies, specially one that was involved inn getting humans killed, tortured etc Not saying they should make the next eps torture feast, but too much has happened to the characters in Galactica to not feel hate for cylons and the "president".
I totally agree with you, I enjoy Baltar so much, you hate him, you like him, you think he's nuts no matter what you feel about him, he's interesting in a weird sort of way. I want him around till the end. (hope that's later than sooner)
