Just a minor correction; the catapult is used on modern aircraft carriers to get the jets up to the required airspeed in the short distance available. They can not accelerate this quickly on their own. Fuel economy is not a problem as the Navy has airborne tankers on station during most missions.
Please note that the above information comes from my second hand information as I was just a grunt. Hopefully one of the Air-Wing blokes can corroborate this info for us all.
