  • "Hamlet", not without the Prince, but with the wrong Prince.

The miscasting of Derek Jacobi is what undermines this workmanlike and straightforward version of "Hamlet". Jacobi - roughly the same age as Olivier was, playing the role in his 1948 film version - catches a good bit of the character's intellectuality, but little of his passion or his rage, and he seems too old to be a student. Nor does he convince as a swordsman. Claire Bloom and Patrick Stewart are fine as Gertrude and Claudius, but it's impossible to believe that Bloom could be Jacobi's mother. The scenes with the ghost are done prosaically, and are rather plodding - Patrick Allen inspires no fear. Lalla Ward seems over-parted as Ophelia.
