Episode Summary

Bear's Birthday Bash
It's Bear's birthday. He goes to check the mail and finds a nice card from his friend Ursa. He then settles in to enjoy a relaxing day. He wants to do nothing at all, but the kids of the Big Blue House have other ideas. When they find out about Bear's plans for the day, they talk about just what they can do to show Bear how much they appreciate him. Ojo decides that they should give him a surprise party. With our help, they work hard to put together the party, while making sure the surprise isn't spoiled. Shadow even helps out, first by distracting Bear and then telling him a story about the children of the week.moreless

    Trivia, Notes, Quotes and Allusions

    • TRIVIA (2)

      • In addition to the "Happy, Happy Birthday" song, this episode also includes two tunes heard in past episodes as well --- "Everybody in the Tub" and "The Bear Cha-Cha-Cha." In the closing credits, "Happy, Happy Birthday" appears by that title --- it was listed in the closing credits of "Mouse Party" as "The Birthday Song."

      • This episode contains many references to "Mouse Party" from the first season. It features the same basic idea of giving someone a surprise party. The characters generally fall into the same party-preparation roles they had in that episode. Tutter, joining in on the preparations this time, prepares a four-cheese cheesecake (the same type of cake he had at his party) with the aid of the book Cooking with Cheese. He was seen reading from this book in the "When I'm Older" song in "Mouse Party." Pip and Pop once again get tangled up in the decorations. Finally, the kids perform for Bear the "Happy, Happy Birthday" song that was heard in "Mouse Party."

    • QUOTES (8)

      • Bear: This is great. I didn't want a fuss made, but, wow, I can't believe it.

      • Shadow: Well, I think we've spent enough time together now, Bear.
        Bear: Huh?
Shadow: Oh, I mean, um --- I've got to fly now. So, um, see you soon.

      • Treelo: Bear Cha-cha-cha. Cha-cha-cha.
Tutter: Treelo, look, we don't care if it's the Porcupine Cha-cha-cha.
        Pop: Yeah.
Tutter: We still haven't go time to go dancing!
Ojo: Oh oh oh, wait! Yeah. Yeah. The cha-cha-cha. Treelo's got a great idea about how to get Bear out of the living room.

      • Pop: How are we supposed to decorate the living room with Bear resting in there?
Pip: It would ruin the surprise.

      • Ojo: Hey, has anyone ever told you you smell like cereal?

      • Ojo: Hey, "give."
        Pip and Pop: Cool, "give."
        Tutter: Huh?
Ojo: Giving is a really nice way to make someone feel good. But what do you give someone on their birthday?

      • Tutter: Happy birthday, Bear! Break out the cheddar, guys! The Big Blue House is partyin' today!

      • Bear: And do you know what I like to do on my birthday? I like to have a nice quiet day relaxing with my friends doing nothing at all.

    • NOTES (0)

    • ALLUSIONS (1)

      • When considering where to do nothing first, Bear decides on the Bear swing. "To the Bear swing!" he shouts, a likely reference to the phrase "To the Batmobile!" from Batman.
