Episode begins with a man being chased through the jungle by a wolf. Dar sees this happening, perched high in a tree and swings down to stop the man when he throws a spear at the wolf. Dar speaks to the wolf to tell her he is a friend, and the man runs off in the opposite direction. Dar follows him.
After the opening, we see that the man has stolen half of Dar's staff, and Dar confronts him to give it back. Dar says he saved the man's life, but the man says he only saved the wolf's life and because she had stolen his food that she deserved to die. After Dar asks him if he should die because he stole his staff, the man threatens Dar that he is going to hurt him. Dar stops the man by saying that his friend "who is right behind you" would not like that. The man turns to see Ruh behind him, causing him to give back the half of the staff. Dar asks the man what he was doing so close to a Terron camp, and we find out that he has friends who are prisoners in the camp and Dar offers to help him.
Now to the Terron camp where we see a shot of Kyra before seeing Zad confronting his men about the prisoners that they have just returned with. There were supposed to be three, but instead only two are present. They bare the same markings on their chests as the man Dar encountered earlier. He talks to the men about how they are going to die, listing various ways of torture, but is interrupted when Kyra storms away into her tent.
Zad confronts Kyra and they get into an argument over torturing, compassion, and Zad's feelings for her. Kyra reminds Zad that if he takes her, he will never win her heart, but Zad assures her that he will have her heart, in exchange for the two prisoners living.
Now back to Dar and Tao who is talking to Dar about wolves. He realizes Dar is perplexed about something. Dar says that the Sorceress made the Terron camp disappear and that Tao and him saw her do it, so how is it suddenly there again? Tao states that it was probably a trick, and proceeds to show Dar one of his own – one of those "which cup is the rock under after I scramble them" types. Dar sees the point and realizes that Kyra could still be in the camp.
The new friend comes back with a new weapon, which Tao mocks and says any animal he killed "must have been asleep." Dar and the man get into another argument about needing defense more than strength and the man challenges Dar once again. Dar accepts and proceeds to make the man look like a complete fool by planting him on his face in the dirt and then by breaking his spear.
Back to Kyra now who is dipping her hair tongs into a bowl of poison. Naom, her roommate, confronts her after which Kyra admits she is going to escape that night after Zad comes to visit her. She tries to convince Naom to come with her, but Naom insists that Kyra will die if she tries to escape. In the end, she accepts the fact that she is going to try anyhow. Naom leaves, and Kyra starts rubbing poison on her neck.
Tao is asleep now and Dar is still trying to understand the rock under the cup trick. The man returns with a now stronger weapon and Dar lets him use his staff so he can test the weapon. The man asks Dar if he made the staff himself after seeing the symbols on it. Dar tells him that his father helped him make it and that the symbols are those of his people – the Sula. The symbols tell many things about the Sula and Dar as a whole. They test the new spear, and Dar says he thinks it's "a good one."
Meanwhile, at the Terron camp, we see Zad emerging from his shack, only to disappear just as quickly into Kyra's tent. Zad starts to romantically approach Kyra, stating that once he leaves, the two prisoners will be released. He kisses her, against her will, and lays her down on the bed, where he starts to kiss her neck and is overcome by the poison, allowing Kyra to escape. A Terron tries to stop her, but she stabs him in the neck with her hair tongs which she had earlier coated in poison. She also sees the two prisoners dead hanging upside down from poles.
Sharak, who is flying over the camp, takes a rest on a perch outside the Ancient One's temple. The Sorceress emerges and it is obvious she has been watching Sharak, because she openly wonders why he was there.
Kyra now, is climbing over some rocks in the jungle. She takes a rest and is confronted by a wolf, which reports back to Dar what he is seeing. Dar is hurriedly packing his things as Tao returns stating that their new friend Feno must have left sometime during the night because he couldn't find him. Dar and Tao run off in Kyra's direction after Dar explains what has just happened. The wolf in the meantime is now leading Kyra in Dar's direction.
As the wolf and Kyra are traveling, Kyra rips her clothing on a branch, but reassures the wolf that "it is nothing" after it expresses its concern. It should be noted that a piece of her skirt was left behind on the branch.
Zad now has sent two soldiers to see the Sorceress so that she might help them find Kyra. She conjures up what looks to be a cougar to find Kyra, but first warns the men to take care because it likes to kill its prey.
Back to Tao and Dar who are running through a clearing. Tao doesn't understand why the wolf is helping Kyra, but Dar explains that it's because she's a Sula, like Dar, and that the wolf knows it. They stop behind some brush when they see two Terron hunters searching for Kyra. Feno ambushes the two, but Dar must come to rescue him because he is so incompetent in battle. Feno admits that he wanted to capture the soldiers to trade for his friends, but when Dar tells him that Zad doesn't trade in flesh, Feno says he should have just killed the men instead. This causes a heated argument between Dar and Tao against Feno. Dar tries to convince Feno that killing a man does not make him a better warrior. Dar and Tao leave Feno to continue searching for Kyra, who is then shown to be traded off to another wolf to continue their part of the journey.
Zad himself, now angry with his soldiers for their continuing failures, confronts the Sorceress and demands that she put a spell on Kyra to make her suffer. The Sorceress says that his ideas are "middling tortures" and says that if you really want to "make them suffer…you need to know what they value and then take it away." Zad says this is a fabulous idea, and demands now that Dar be killed to hurt Kyra. The Sorceress once again has to explain to Zad that the pain of death goes away over time. Zad then comes up with the idea to make Kyra love him instead because it's the one thing she would never freely give.
Now back to Dar, Tao and Feno (who decided to follow them earlier) as they come across the tracks of Terrons who are using the cougar to track down Kyra. Dar knows that the creature is "not from nature." Tao then finds the piece of ripped fabric from Kyra's skirt.
Now that both groups are close to Kyra's location, the wolf knows that they are being followed and convinces Kyra to continue on without it, as it turns around and walks in the direction from which they just came.
Dar stops to talk to Sharak, who shows him the wolf who has gone back to fight the cougar, and to show the Terrons gaining on Kyra. He sees that Kyra has come upon a village. Feno knows the village – Cicada – and says that it is no place for a woman, causing Dar to rush off in its location.
Meanwhile, the Sorceress is concocting a potion for Zad when the Ancient One interrupts her. They talk about love, strength, and emotions. We also come to hear a bit of foreshadowing of future episodes concerning Sharak, the Sorceress and the relationship of a past Sorcerer.
Back to Kyra now, whom the Terrons are dangerously close to, as she tries to find some help in the village. She sees smoke and enters the shack where the fire is. As she warms herself, she is grabbed from behind by a deformed man covered in animal pelts. Kyra struggles to get away, but it is the cougar that distracts the man long enough for her to get away. As Kyra comes into a clearing Dar comes upon her and they share an embrace.
Dar introduces Kyra to Tao and Feno, and Feno asks about the fate of his friends, to which Kyra replies that Zad let them only escape "from this life." Tao switches shoes with Kyra to lead the cougar away from the trio that now take off in the opposite direction. Tao runs across multiple small bodies of water and the scent is thrown. Ruh, who has been following the Terrons confronts the cougar as it is trying to reclaim the scent, and one swipe from his claws sends the cougar back to the pile of dust from which it had originally came. In the scurrying away from Ruh, the Terrons run right into Dar's path, where he and Feno proceed to subdue all of them. Feno has a chance to kill one of the Terrons, but Dar convinces him not to.
Back at the Sanctuary that evening, Tao and Feno talk about how much Feno has grown as a warrior, while Dar and Kyra "swim" in a lake nearby. Feno then says his goodbyes.
The scene now switches to later on, and the Sorceress is playing with some birds as she tries more and more to understand human emotions. We can see her watching Dar and Kyra as they make plans for the future. Dar leaves Kyra by the river so he can go find Tao so that they can leave. As Dar walks away, a pink glow, like which the Sorceress had been playing around with earlier sweeps around Kyra and captures her in the Sorceress's watching pool. The Ancient One interrupts and is furious with the Sorceress for mingling in the affairs and emotions of humans and proceeds to take Kyra from the watching pool and places her in the crystal that is protruding from his forehead.
The episode ends with Dar screaming Kyra's name in an emotional outburst.
