Point and Shoot
AIRED:
Lynn, Sophie, and Karen throw a dinner party. Sophie decides to invite her photography teacher in hopes of matching him up with her mother. Also, Lynn finds herself a job at a fashion company, while Karen finds herself working as a nightclub waitress and not that thrilled about it. Meanwhile, Sophie gets accepted into an advanced photography class which causes Nicky to pursue the same class even though he knows nothing about photography. Later that day Paisley steals Sophies' camera after Nicky broke up with her and claims not to know anything about it. Her and Nicky search the school for her camera and end up walking through the park as Nicky tells her about his improved knowledge about photograph after taking her advise about "doing his homework". They end up kissing as Gideon sees them after leaving the party to go and find her.moreless

  • Looking to connect their new home to their old, Lynn reestablishes a family tradition of community dinners. However, New York is more complicated than Espranza, New Mexico and the new tradition gets off to a rocky start.moreless

    9.2
Typically the second episode of a series corrects story lines in the pilot that didn’t work and to remove extraneous characters. In the case of Beautiful People, however, episode two tried to define supporting characters and introduce new story lines. Sophie still dominates the action but her sister Karen shows both her wild side and naiveté when she is hired as a cocktail waitress. Lynn’s story receives fuller definition although the astute viewer has already realized that Lynn and Julian were more than coworkers on a college newspaper. The most significant part of the episode was the rounding out of Nicholas (Nicky) who we learn is intimidated by his father and coddled by his mother. Other than Paisley the other BP’s are absent from the story.

The story revolved around Lynn’s attempt to reestablish a tradition from Espranza of periodic “community dinners”. The community turns out to be very difficult to create and only three guests come to dinner and Sophie, distracted by Nicky, get home in time for dinner.

After two episodes I can says that “Beautiful People” is the most promising of several summer series offerings and I look forward to the next few episodes.moreless
