Beautiful People

Show Summary

Beautiful People is a BBC comedy-drama series starring Luke Ward-Wilkinson, Layton Williams, and Olivia Colman in a story about a fourteen-year-old in Reading, Berkshire who dreams of escaping his boring hometown for the glamor of the big city, based on the lauded memoirs of Barneys creative director Simon Doonan. Each episode begins in the present day, as grown-up Simon (played by Samuel Barnett) goes about his business in fabulous New York City. Simon remembers the story of how he got something as a child, such as his gorgeous vase, a snow globe, or his broken nose. The episode is then told in flashback, with Ward-Wilkinson playing the young Simon. Simon and his best friend Kylie are effeminate, fashion-obsessed boys living in eternally ordinary Reading, where they're often bullied for acting gay. Simon and Kylie dream of living in a city full of beautiful people, a place where high-fashion and decadence are accepted. As boys, however, they have no choice but to find beauty wherever they can in their humble hometown. Beautiful People is a fun series that has been described as the "British Arrested Development."moreless
