Lynyrd Skynyrd was one of the top musical groups of the 1970s. With their blues-based songs that told of real life for working people in the South, they caught on with audiences around America.

This show takes you into the lives of each musician and their families. It shows you where they came from and a little of what they were really like. Although it's not the same as meeting them in person, it's a very candid story that brings home their identities as normal, day-to-day people. You will see how they learned to play, how they became friends, the story behind the recording of many songs, and countless other fascinating stories.

Unfortunately, they played as hard offstage as on: problems with drugs, particularly alcohol, sapped their health. A plane crash in 1977 killed members of the group and entourage.

Surviving members have since regrouped to continue recording and touring. This progress has not been without tension, but has proven still widely popular with fans.

This episode is one of the most riveting documentaries ever made. Even if you are not a fan of this group, the storytelling in the special is so detailed and powerful, it will show you why this series catapulted to national renown. People could not stop talking about this episode, as well as several other standouts in the first season, and it's easy to understand why.

    It's a rattling good yarn.moreless
