As far as pilots go this one is pretty good. Most of the things I continue to like about the series exist in the pilot episode instead of being defined in later episodes.
First: Ben is not your perfect superhero. He's just an average kid. He wants to do the right thing but he also wants what he wants and doesn't always think about personal gain or about the consequences.
Second: His family knows about it. This saves us from the insane storylines where the hero has to jump through hoops to hide his identity from his closest friends and family. It's about time for something different.
Third: Enter Gramps as Jiminy Cricket. Every superhero needs a concience. And it helps that Gramps is Ben's. It serves two purposes. It gives Ben's character room to develop into a more responsible superhero and it creates a positive example of following the rules. Let's face it this show is for kids. And anything that helps parents get the point across is good.
