A pretty standard Ben 10 episode with all the standard stuff. An antagonist that isn't too terribly creative with a rather cliche cause; a bug user's old run down apartment is being overrun for renovations and somewhere there is intent on world domination. So the episode is constructed with your standard set up, and the execution isn't too much better. With episodes like these it's hard to fit room in for character development and as you'd expect, there's close to none here. Grandpa being his usual badass self and Gwen and Ben with their childish bickering, and the action is nothing to write home about. Run of the mill episode.
Clancy, a man who controls bugs tries to attack a Councilwoman, while Ben gets a cold because of ice cream party.
The Councilwoman wanted to tear down Clancy's home - the place where he lives with his bugs - and Clancy kidnaped her for a revenge.
Ben's cold affects his aliens forces and he has to deal with that in real-time while fighting Clancy.
I liked this episode because of it's story and the creative ideas in it. Ben's cold and the villian in this story, that in my opinion is very cool. This episode isn't very funny but it's interesting and has a cool storyline.
A man named Clancy, who has the power to control insects take revenge on Councilwoman Liang because she wants to tear down the building where he and his insects live. Meanwhile Ben has to deal with the strange side effects a cold has on his alien forms. When Councilwoman Liang attempts to redevelop the downtown area, the demolition efforts disturb a man named Clancy, who has the ability to control insects. Meanwhile, as Ben stops a criminal as Upgrade, he spots at a nearby ice cream truck. When he climbs inside to get a snack, he gets himself locked inside and ends up catching a cold. The virus binds with the alien DNA in the Omnitrix, causing side effects, and weakening his normally powerful forms. On top of that, Clancy kidnaps the councilwoman and threatens the entire city with a meltdown at the nuclear power plant. Now, Ben must save the day while dealing with the strange side effects in his alien forms.
I usually have a high regard for Ben 10 episodes. They are fun, exciting and reveal the best in the characters. However, this episode somewhat disappoints me in terms of the intensity of the chill. The "side effects" as mentioned in the episode title suggest bad stuff happening as a result of the chill virus, but really, not much of a disadvantage occurred at all. I think I expected more disastrous consequences of using the Omnitrix in a sick condition.
However, I have very good comments regarding the villain, Clancy. I love the idea of insect crooks, and the Powerpuff Girls did it well, along with Ben 10.
Very nice. I kinda think wildmutt's sense of "hearing" is sorta like that of a bat (whose sonar is blocked somehow.) Thye cannot "see" anything. Definately an awesome episode though.
Yeah, i liked it. not as good as the benwolf episode but still cool. My fave Omnitrix aliens are Wildmutt, Benwolf, XLR8, and Ripjaws. I like all of the characters but those are my fave aliens. The whole show is funny, the plot/storyline of the series is good, but i wouldnt mind seeing more of the lesser known Omnitrix aliens in future episodes.
This episode was very interesting. We now know what happens to the aliens on the Omnitrix when Ben gets sick. I liked the fact that Heatblast now controls ice instead of fire. That's awesome! I loved the beginning scene where Ben (as Upgrade controlling a motorcycle) was chasing the robber and then decided to get some ice cream from the ice cream truck nearby. I thought it was funny that Ben accidentally locked himself inside. I don't care for Clancy though. I hate bugs so it was obvious that I would hate this guy from the very beginning. Other than that, this episode was pretty good.
This episode really revealed a lot about The Omnitrix's aliens. I always wondered what would happen if Ben wasn't himself and this episode actually explained it all. The storyline to this episode was good too because Ben had to learn to deal with his dreadful side effects to beat the weird Clancy, a strange blue man who can control any insect and use it to his advantage. The animation in this episode was also amazing with a lot of detail and description.
I think that the episode could have had more aliens from the Omnitrix appear. Still this episode was very revealing and entertaining.
This episode is defenitely one of the best season one episodes. Whether it was the kooky bug guy who wanted to destroy Chinatown, an actual plot, or the way the aliens reacted to the cold, they all added to this episode's success. There were seven good things about this episode. 1. Lots of Gwen and Max action! 2. The whole feel the episode made about Chinatown! 3. The Main Villain! 4. Upgrade action! 5. Councilwoman Liang! 6. The fight scene in the old apartment! 7. The Wildmutt scene... 2 things were bad about this episode... 1. The overusage of Fourarms! 2. The scene at the end where Heatblast freezes the central core and the bugs looked very cheesy and cheap. All in all, "Side Effects" was a really good episode...
We travel to what is apparently either Oakland or San Francisco in this chapter, and Ben fights two bugs - the little bug of a summer cold, and the big bugs of an insect-controlling squatter.
This was a relatively star-studded episode. Nancy Linari, Nicholas Guest and Rosalind Chao all guest-starred. Ben and Gwen get to see the SF Bay Area, and even participate in the destruction of an old brownstone. Cities are all about demolition, especially when land is limited.
Each episode has something gross about it, but this ep was gross all the way through as Ben's cold had him and his alien forms spewing mucus left and right. I halfway expected Wildmutt to sneeze through his "gills" and clear them so he could sense things. But, he didn't. That was a very neat visual of his "blindness," though - the Kirby dots bobbling around in stripes, in black and white, really suggested his sickness & dizziness, and lack of meaningful perception.
Gwen on Wildmutt's back was a poor driver. She should be guiding with care, not with command. I liked that they could *not* work together successfully as they had in the past. Things not working out as expected makes for better and more realistic storylines.
The Clancy character, unnamed in the show, was well designed as a pale bum (why aren't villains ever tanned?) with hair hanging over his face like feelers. He commanded many colonies of insects and arachnids. Possibly they were his only friends, growing up. I would guess his backstory, if he had one, is that his rich grandfather is a slumlord, and Clancy is a by-blow of the builder's son. Raised in poverty and hating his father for treating his mother so carelessly, Clancy claimed the building as his inheritance and chased everyone else out with his bugs.
We didn't get to see Stinkfly in this episode. Possibly Clancy would control him, as Animo tried to affect Stinkfly (and missed), and the writer didn't want to get into that twist at this time. Possessed Ben will come later in the series. Also, a sick Fly might be just a puddle of snot and chitin. Yuck.
Gwen came off as unsympathetic in this overall - more as she was in the pilot. Evidently Ben and Gwen have a history of animosity, and to shelve it just because Ben's going through some changes would be a shame! Max revealed more of his secret past as he tried to shut down the reactor. Max is one versatile dude.
It was heartening to see that Ben, stable-minded as ever, continues to play the hero even when he should be recovering. Awww. What a good, if dumb, kid!
After chasing down some bad guys ben sees a Ice Cream Truck and climbs in and gets a summer cold. Now when he goes into one of his Alien Forms they are affected differently than the others. In the end Gwen Catches the cold that Ben had.
This episode was pretty funny with all the Aliens acting wierd this was one of the best Episodes in the entire series. Although the thought of a hoard of cockroaches, wasps, and ants is enough to make my skin crawl. The show was excellent in every aspect It was fun to see Gwen Catching the cold that Ben Had.
I expected Stinkfly to be In it, but it was good anyway. It does a number on comedy, But it was a good episode and Im very glad the creators of Ben 10 Produced this. It was a new episode, and it had good animation and creativity. It showed how Ben is reacting to the fact thatv summer gets you sick, And it leads to unfortuanute consequences. He got a watch, He got a cold, and it leads to the fact that summer can get you sick and have bad Side Effects in your Watch. Good Episode, Worthy of Remake.
Ben gets a cold, which causes bizarre side effects on his alien forms. Meanwhile, a madman with the power to control insects vows to destroy Chinatown.
This was the weakest episode of the series so far. A lot of things simply made no sense:
-The way the flying insects, working together, could lift people into the air.
-The origins of Clancy's powers (and insanity) were never explained.
-The effects of the cold on Wildmutt and Fourarms were acceptable, but switching Hotspot's fire powers into ice ones? That would require a complete DNA change, in efect creating a new alien form.
-Clancy's plans were just plain absurd, from thinking that killing the Councilwoman would stop the demoliton of his home, to thinking he would survive a nuclear meltdown just because he was covered in cockroaches! (The roaches might survive the radiation, but unless they were lead-lined or something, they wouldn't stop it from getting to Clancy. And what about the nuclear heat from the explosion?? He was clearly insane.
-Since when can a mass of insects act as a strenght-increasing exoskeleton? Clancy's powers must\'ve been magical- there's no other way to justify the way they violated the laws of physics.
-The bugs fly away... because they preferred Grandpa's medicine over Clancy\'s commands?? I'd expect that in a silly series like Shaolin Showdown, but Ben 10 has been much more serious so far. And didn't the stuff smell terrible anyway?
-Gwen's luck (both good and bad) is getting ridiculous. How'd she manage to get herself trapped in Chinese fireworks about to explode?? Clancy didn't even put her there!
Overall, a weak episode of what has been (so far) one of my favorite new animated series.
This episode was well-plotted out. The episode showed yet another example of how action cartoons should be written. That's what you would expect from Ben 10 right?
This episode starts when we see a wrecking ball hitting an old building. However, someone by the name of Clancy who controls bugs refuses to leave, and threatens them if they continue what they are doing.
Meanwhile, Ben pursues a robber as Upgrade. When he catches him, he spots a nearby ice cream truck, and decides to let himself in for a treat. Unfortunately, Grandpa Max and Gwen find him inside the back of the truck. He catches a summer cold, and that cold spreads into the DNA in the Omnitrix, giving them unusual side effects compared to that of the normal symptoms of the common cold. Wildmutt has mucus in his senses, Four Arms has smelly hives in his underarms, and Heat Blast goes way below his normal body temperature. However, they may have been critical effects to his forms, yet it became an ally at the end. Instead of making things worse, Heat Blast cools down the nuclear core reactor before it self-destructed. And he was able to stop Clancy right?
At the end, Ben is back to normal again, but confront Clancy one more time. Max and Gwen attempt to drive off the creepy cockroaches, but Ben saved the day by attracting the bugs with Max's San Ju Yen Pien medication, and threw them out into the sea.
Now wasn't it interesting when Ben was sick for awhile?
