EDIT
At Yellowstone Park, Ben and Gwen inadvertently discover a new alien from the Omnitrix: Cannon Bolt, an armadillo-like alien that Ben isn't too fond of. Soon after, a meteor comes crashing down to the park, containing a planet-devouring, tick-like alien. On top of that, three other aliens arrive with it, and worship it as their savior, the "Great One." Powerless to stop the planet-eater with his regular forms, Ben must rely on a new form he knows nothing about. • A new hero comes into town.

    7.5
We see a bit more in this episode of what comprises the charm of Ben 10; powerful alien beings with the personality of a child. With Cannonbolt being introduced to the family, we get to see more of this humour. Just a sneak peak though which only lasts for the beginning of the episode. Everything else about the episode is below average. The conflict at hand? Nothing exciting, a big bad insect thing is absorbing the earth and of course Ben finds a way to destroy it. The antagonists? Would be more interesting if we got to know them better, unfortunately the time span of a half hour cartoon show doesn't allow us that. If the conflict was better developed and the aliens stuck around longer, this could have been a great episode. Too bad that's not the case.moreless
  • There are many loose ends unexplained in this episode.

    7.6
This episode's plot seems to be lacking in something. It attempts to portray Cannon Bolt as a hero, but they could have used a better storyline, certainly, what with all the loopholes and ridiculous elements throughout the show.

First, how is it possible that Yellowstone Park is completely devoid of a single person whatsoever? It was daylight when they reached, and not some ungodly hour, so why is it that not a single soul is seen in the show besides Ben and his family?

Second, the idea of a giant insect suddenly crashing down on Earth right in front of Ben is downright impossible. The probability is very minute, and no one seemed to question that.

Third, the fact that none of the alien heroes could even hurt a hair of the monster's head except a big bouncing Cannon Bolt ball is laughable. If even Heat Blast's fire, Diamond Head's spikes and Ghostfreak's creatures could do nothing to it, how is that hitting its innards would work?

I know they're just trying to show us Cannon Bolt's strength, but it is not convincing at all with such a paltry plotline.moreless
  • good tv show.

During a trip to Yellowstone National Park, Ben discovers a new form on the Omnitrix: Cannonbolt, an armadillo- and beetle-like alien. At the same time, a meteor crashes nearby unleashing a giant, tick-like alien called the "Great One" that intends to devour the planet. On top of that, it has its very own worshipers, who intend to make sure it completes its task. Ben easily defeats the worshipers, but the Great One is impervious to all of his original alien forms. Since nothing else works, Ben has to rely on a form he knows nothing about in order to defeat the Great One. He quickly discovers that Cannonbolt is impervious from any attack when rolled into an armored ball and penetrates the Great One's armor in that form, killing the alien from the inside. The worhippers proclaim Ben the new Great One, but change their minds once he reverts back to normal.moreless

Trivia, Notes, Quotes and Allusions

FILTER BY TYPE

  • TRIVIA (7)

    • Think Ahead: The Omnitrix recharges directly after the first transformation after an alien is absorbed by DNA. It is possible this is why Ben was able to transform 11 times in the episode.

    • Listen Carefully: When Grandpa Max says "Digest this", his voice sounds sort of like Wildvine's.

    • Man Of Action, the creators of Ben 10, say that Cannon Bolt is an Arburian Pelarota, although Bandai says he is a Vulpinic Tortugan. Man Of Action is correct, because Cannon Bolt's planet was destroyed, and Wildmutt's wasn't. In "Big Fat Alien Wedding", further proof is given that Cannon Bolt is an Arburian Pelarota.

    • Look Closely: When Cannon Bolt falls and struggles to get up, the shell on his back is gone.

    • Look Closely: Before Ben transforms into Cannon Bolt for the first time, he is wearing a portable radio, but when he changes back the radio is gone.

    • How could the "Great One" destroy Cannon Bolt's "home planet," when it was the only alien form that was able to kill it?

    • When Ben was attacking the Big Tick and used 9 of the 11 aliens, Grey Matter was not used, most likely because Ben figured he was too weak. That might have worked, however, because Grey Matter's knowledge could find the Big Tick's weaknesses and then when the Omnitrix powered down, he could use a strong alien to attack a weak spot.

  • QUOTES (17)

    • Gwen: You're like a bowling ball!
Cannon Bolt: More like a cannon ball!
(the aliens fire a blast at him, but reflects it back at them)
Cannon Bolt: Actually, make that a Cannon Bolt!

    • Ben: (cleaning the RV) Me and my big mouth!
Grandpa Max: Uh, Ben, you missed some tick goop over there.
      Ben: Oh, man!

    • Gwen: It looks like everything's going back to normal.
Ben: Hate to break it to you, Gwen, but nothing we ever do is normal.

    • Leader Alien: Hail to the new Great One!
      Interpreter Alien: Hail, hail!
      Enforcer Alien: Whatever.
Gwen: Not too loyal, are they?
Cannon Bolt: Huh! I could get used to this.

    • Enforcer Alien: It's time for the final purification of your planet and you 3 along with it.
Gwen: Please tell me we have a plan "B."

    • Ben: (trying to ride on the aliens' hoverboard) Oh, man. Where's an instruction manual when you need it?

    • Leader Alien: I have visual recognition on the elderly man and prepubescent female, but what are they riding on?
Stinkfly: Two tons of putrid power! Now, move it or lose it!

    • Stinkfly: Time to tick off a tick!

    • Grandpa Max: Who are you guys?
Leader Alien: Relax. We come in peace.
Gwen: That's what they always say right before they blow you to bits!
Enforcer Alien: Mm. An Earthling with attitude... I've heard they exist here in large numbers, or should I say "did"?

    • Grandpa Max: (covering his nose; about the alien) Whew! And quite aromatic.
Gwen: I just thought that was Ben not taking a shower for 3 days.
      Cannon Bolt: 4 and counting!

    • Cannon Bolt: This alien's got to go. (rolls up in a ball)
Gwen: Don't you mean got to roll?

    • Grandpa Max: And we can live right off the land. Mm! Grub worms! Full of protein. (eats a worm)
Ben & Gwen: (in unison) Eww!

    • Grandpa Max: Never was much for tug of war!

    • Leader Alien: Let the digestion begin!
Grandpa Max: Digest this! (hits alien)

    • Stinkfly: Oh, yeah! Who's bad? Oh, yeah!
      (Omnitrix begins to power down)
Stinkfly: Oh, no! (reverts back to Ben)
      Ben: Help!

    • Gwen: (to Stinkfly) We really need to get you some underwing deodorant. Ugh! (covers her nose)

    • Grandpa Max: Grub worms. (picks up a grub worm) Full of protein. (eats grub worm)
Ben & Gwen: (in unison) Ew!
Grandpa Max: You grill 'em up with a sun-dried tomato paste, they are--
Gwen: (after Grandpa Max eats worms; to Ben) Maybe I can help. I'll take my burger with chili.

  • NOTES (19)

    • Omnitrix Malfunctions - XLR8-Cannon Bolt

    • In the original version of the show, Cannon Bolt was one of the original 10 aliens, but was replaced by Diamond Head in production.

    • This is the second time that Ben has become the same alien twice in the same episode, namely Cannon Bolt. The first time being in "Hunted" when he became Diamond Head twice.

    • Cartoon Network (UK) airdate: Saturday, June 10th, 2006.

    • Main Villain Bio: The Great One - A huge insect-like creature. It travels the galaxy finding planets with organic life and drains it. The process also mutates the planet's water and plants. Its three followers are a four-eyed warrior, a humanoid-being in a white robe, and a tiny centipede-like creature who can understand him.

    • Ben gains the ability to turn into the new alien form, Cannon Bolt, in this episode.

    • The alien home world the Cannon Bolt form is from was reported by one of the worshippers as being destroyed just a week before showing up on the Omnitrix just as the creature that destroyed that world was arriving.

    • The Great One has the ability to absorb a planet's energy by penetrating its roots to reach the core. Once this process has started, it immediately takes in energy, like drying up bodies of water, or destroying healthy ecosystems, until the planet crumbles.

    • Grandpa Max demonstrates his odd taste of food in this episode once again by unexpectedly picking up a dead log to find live grub worms. He shows his grandkids how nature can provide such a food source when rational supply is scarce.

    • The three alien worshippers' names are not mentioned in anyway throughout the episode.

    • Cannon Bolt's form was first activated while Gwen had her hand on the Omnitrix. This is the first time she has touched the device, leading to the possibility that her assistance released the dormant form.

    • Main Transformation(s): Cannon Bolt.

    • Unlike the other aliens, Cannon Bolt seems to be completely covered in the Omnitrix's design.

    • New Alien Form Bio: Cannon Bolt is an Arburian Pelarota, an alien species whose planet was destroyed by the "Great One." Cannon Bolt is a hulking, broad-shouldered alien covered in extremely tough armor plating that can cover his entire body, turning him into a fast-moving, semi-invincible ball. When not in ball form, however, Cannon Bolt is clumsy and slow.

    • Main Villain(s): The Great One & his Worshippers.

    • Running Gag: Ben's new alien form always falling on his back.

    • Alien Form(s) Used:
All forms are used (excluding Grey Matter), as Ben attempts to use them in a manner to try and attack the "Great One."

      1) Cannon Bolt.
      2) Stinkfly.
      3) Four Arms.
      4) Heat Blast.
      5) Wildmutt.
      6) XLR8.
      7) Diamond Head.
      8) Ghostfreak.
      9) Upgrade.
      10) Ripjaws.

    • This episode features a new alien hero, which was not featured previously. This ultimately leads off its main show title, which refers to the first ten aliens. It's also not made clear just how this transformation was made available in the first place.

    • This episode premiered on a special day and time: Tuesday, May 30th, 2006 at 7:00 PM EST/PST.

  • ALLUSIONS (6)

    • The Great One: DBZ
The Great One was just like the Tree of Might from the Dragonball Z movie.

    • Ben: Oh, man!
"Oh, man!" is a phrase that Ben says multiple times in this episode when something unpleasant or bad happens. This is a reference to the catchphrase used by Jake in American Dragon: Jake Long, which he says in the same type of situations.

    • Cannon Bolt: Appearance
Cannon Bolt's appearance looks and moves like a Goron from the Ledgend of Zelda: Majora's Mask.

    • The Great One: Appearance
"The Great One" bears a striking resemblance to Galactus of the Marvel Comics universe. Both are giants that try to wipe out organic life through feeding off of a planet and have aliens that follow and worship them.

    • Cannon Bolt: Ability
Cannon Bolt's primary ability is a lot like Sonic the Hedgehog's. Both curl up into a ball and can smash when they build up speed.

    • Cannon Bolt: Peter Parker
When Cannon Bolt is trying to see if he can fire magnetic pulse blasts, he begins making strange hand signs. Many of the hand signs he makes match those made by Peter when he is trying to fire webs in the live-action movie, Spider-Man.
