Another episode of Ben 10, another predictable storyline and outcome. The set up is pretty unique; a 2 billion underwater hotel and resort? Puts an interesting twist in the whole economics of things and the setting is more detailed than you would think. The plot though of the Matrix like tentacle machines invading the resort to regain back their energy orb that is powering the hotel? It's pretty cliche at this point and it was seen a mile away. Fortunately though there's more to this episode, which is the characters and the development of Edwin. His development throughout the episode was steady and incremental and it was great to see him change his attitude as it went along. Then there's also Max and Edwin's grandfather sharing the value of their grandchildren with each other, which really added some great moral value to the episode. Predictable plot but very good theme.
Maybe my expectations have been lowered, but the more recent episodes have been pretty good, though still not jaw-breakingly cool. This episode focuses on an underwater adventure, complete with speedboat rides, rollercoaster escapades and grandfather-grandson kinships. I like the use of Grey Matter, Ripjaws and Stinkfly this episode, they were all well maneuvred unlike other episodes involving my less favourite heroes like Four-Arms and Diamond Head. However, I want to comment that Stinkfly has been used quite a number of times this season. Perhaps it is time to give that smelly bug a rest and let us see some Ghostfreak and XLR8 action. Of course, Cannon Bolt and Wildvine deserve more appearances too.
The family ride a jet belonging to Grandpa Max's old Friend, Donovan Grand Smith, who owns an underwater resort. At the entrance, they receive a warm welcome from Donovan himself, though they also meet with his grandson, Edwin, who didn't seem to be excited about their guests. Later, when Edwin, Ben, and Gwen enter the Undersea Manta Ray, a giant submarine, they encounter strange aliens that threatened to destroy the whole resort. While the kids find a way to cooperate with each other to find the source that lures them in, Donovan himself learns a few lessons in how to bond better with his grandson.
This episode was really good. I was a little apprehensive about watching it because I'm claustrophobic and hydrophobic(sort of) and I didn't like the fact that Ben was stuck outside the ship after reverting back from Ripjaws or the fact that the resort was underwater. My favorite scenes include: the scene where Grey Matter attempted to fight off the shark, the scene where Edwin, Ben, and Gwen fought off the Bermuda Triangle aliens on the waterskis, the scene where Edwin figures out Ben's secret and asks him how he changes into the different aliens, and the scene at the end of the episode where Edwin and his grandfather talk and settle their differences.
What we have here is another fun one-shot, adventurous undersea episode. In this episode, Ben, Gwen and Max go to an undersea resort owned by a friend of Max. Ben and Gwen are estatic to go to a rich resort and Max is just happy that they're happy. The two characters the family meets are interesting. One of them is Donovan, Max's old friend turned billionaire and the other is Edwin, his grandson. We can immediately see the strained relationship between the two as Donovan tries to groom Edwin into his likeness with Edwin sick of his grandpa's demands. The villains here are undersea robotic alien jellyfish who apparently caused the mysteries of the Bermuda Triangle. I basically didn't care about their backstory because all I saw them as are just robots Ben gets to smash. Anyways, the robotic jellyfish start attacking the hotel and along the way, the kids get separated from the grandparents. Apparently, the jellyfish are trying to take back their power source, which was used to power up the hotel. Donovan starts to worry about his grandson, while Max remains calm, knowing that Ben and Gwen will be alright. Donovan realizes that he hasn't been letting his grandon be himself. Meanwhile, Ben, Gwen and Edwin try their best their best to fight the alien onslaught, while figuring out a way to stop it. Edwin easily figuring out about Ben's ability to "turn superhero." Eventually they figure out what's going on and they manage to defeat the aliens, at the cost of destroying the resort.
A fine episode, and one hopes to see Donovan and Edwin again, if only to see Gwen and Edwin interact again. Maybe in Donovan's new resort perhaps?
Aliens:
1) Grey Matter: An accidental transformation, Ben did as best as he could to save the man in this form.
2) Ripjaws: Of course Ripjaws was gonna be in this episode since it involves the sea.
3) Stinkfly: Did fine, but in "The Krakken", he was able to float in the water, but now he sink.
4) Upgrade: Didn't, but should've seen it coming when I saw the submarine.
It starts off with when they head out to the underwater resort which we then discover that Grandpa Max knew the Billionare Donavan! Then when they tour the place one of the employees was going to be shark food until Gray Matter comes in and punches the shark eye and guided him into the other shark, I loved that part. But I also noticed that Eddie saw Gray matter fly out of the water and headed for the submarine, a little foreshadowing of him knowing Ben's secret. As it continues They took the sting ray sub out for a juvinale ride in the deep untile they come across underwater androids attacking the ship! I liked the long Ripjaw fight but got boring with the basic bite and slash attack over and over again but it was all Ripjaws can do and we have to accept that. Then it revealed that they were looking for the power sorce in the hotel! It then also revealed that Skinkfly litteraly can't swim! And finally I loved the part of Upgrade turning the old sub into the nautilus like ship from 20,000 leagues under the sea.
Creatures that "Lurk Below" that create the mysterious disappearances in the Bermuda Triangle. This is yet another episode of Ben 10 that demonstrates a well-written plot and excellent transition from beginning to end.
Grandpa Max takes his grandkids along to visit another old friend of his, Donovan, who owns many resorts. They meet up with him at the underwater resort located in the Atlantic Ocean, and to be more specific, right in the middle of the mysterious Bermuda Triangle. Ben and Gwen meet Edwin, Donovan's grandson, who didn't seem to be respectful to his guests.
The kids have fun with their tour in the resort, though Grandpa Max had a feeling that something is wrong. After all, the resort is located in a place that is recognized as bad luck.
Later, the kids go aboard a submarine, which was off-limits to them. This infuriates Donovan, though he only finds out that the kids are in danger, who are being attacked by unknown alien droids that resemble a jellyfish. Luckily the kids survive and return to the underwater resort, but only to find out that more of the droids have gotten in. The glass dome was then cracked open, which floods the area.
Everyone was able to exvacuate the premises, but the kids were left behind after finding one of the droids splitting their only ride back up to the surface in half. Stinkfly comes to the rescue and was able to get Edwin and Gwen to safety, though end up inside the flood building.
Edwin's suspicions come to light as well, and finds that the aliens that have been on their side was Ben all along. But with no time for questions and answers, they find the source that lures the mysterious water creatures.
Grandpa Max's suspicions were correct, and Donovan confesses that he has been using alien technology to power up the resort. But in the end, the whole resort is destroyed, but he learns of something better. A way to understand and able to listen better to his grandson, Edwin.
This episode was good in the sense that it used Upgrade and Ripjaws instead of using Wildmutt and Fourarms, but I feel that Stinkfly and Grey Matter are starting to be overused. The squid robot aliens were nicely designed, but I couldn't stand Edwin's voice, it was so tacky and Ray-Ray (The Life and Times of Juniper Lee). Nothing of consequence occured in this episode, so if you missed it, don't kick yourself. The whole plot and moral of "Don't Disturb Nature" was also added into this episode which I thought was pretty cool. Voice acting was average and so was the dialogue to go with it. "They Lurk Below" won't be anyone's favorite episode anytime soon, but it is fun to watch.
Ben, Gwen, and Grandpa Max all go visit one of 16 worldwide resorts created by one of Max's friends, and find out that the undersea resort is more dangerous than it seems.
A really good episode, I enjoyed watching it. Plus, we got to see a little Ripjaws action. It's nice to see some of the lesser-used aliens brawl with evil once in a while. Especially Grey Matter. A small six-inch alien gets some sharks away from a bystanding cleanerman.
And who said that small guys couldn't save the day?
It also seems that Ben's getting better with the Omnitrix as well, although the coverups are getting a little worse and worse. Heh, and for once, Ben gets a little help getting out of a tight situtation.
Poor Stinkfly, his wings got wet...it's the Krakken all over again! XD
this episode is actually pretty good i cant believe two people rated this episode for the worst it wasnt that bad it was actually quite good. ive seen most of the episodes of ben 10 missed like one or two but thats it. and this is one of the first episodes i saw and i liked it. so i dont know why they gave it a horrible rating. it was kinda sad because those men where trying to take the monsters babies away she was only protecting them. i dont recall a lot of the episode because i saw it like a few months ago but i remember enough to give this episode a good review.
