  • The story of Detective Bergerac begins...

This is a good pilot episode that tries to set up the background of Detective John Bergerac. We find out that he is a recovering alcoholic, that he was injured and may not return to active police duty and he clashes with superiors - whether its police: Crozier or the upperclass: Hungerford. We find out that he is divorced and has a child. And that his friend has been recently killed - and the police don't seem that interested in getting to the bottom of it. This storyline shows the Bergerac will find out the truth despite whoever's toes he needs to step on. John Nettle plays the lead role well and the scenery is a big plus. But the final revelations about some gun-running deal to South Africa seems out of place in this cozy island world...Maybe in the end, there was too much background to fill in just one episode and this could have been strung out a little more...
