Alison chooses Evan because he's a lot of fun and seems like Alan's type.
Alan and Evan's Date: Alan was nervous because he's very good looking and Evan thinks Alan is cute. They start to make some small talk. Alan thinks Evan is funny and loves that he likes to tell stories because he likes to be entertained and Evan likes that Alan is sarcastic. They get to know each other on a deeper level when they talk about "coming out": Alan's parents still love him and wanted to talk about everything and Evan's parents know that he is gay but they haven't really talked about it yet. They then go to this place where they have to play pool handcuffed. While in the car, they talk about gay marriage and how they wouldn't want to be called "life partners." Evan orders crab when he doesn't like crab and Evan's food comes out of his mouth by accident, making Alan laugh at both incidents. Then they go roller skating, and Alan wishes he could talk to him more.
Evan wants to go on another date romantically because he had a really good time with Alan. At first, Alan rolled his eyes and I'm sure many people were afraid he was gonna reject him, but then he said he would ABSOLUTELY LOVE TO GO ON ANOTHER DATE!moreless

There was some stuff that happened off-camera. Like for example, Evan and Alan were getting bored when they were waiting to order so they had this idea to hit on the beautiful waitress. So she when she came back, they kept flirting and telling her how beautiful she was and that she should model. She was a little offended at first but then Alan told her that they're on a date and they aren't trying to be rude. She gave them a weird look and then Evan said they're on a date together so they laughed it off and she lightened up.

According to a recent IM-terview, Alan and Evan never went on a second date due to Evan living too far away in Seattle. Now Alan has another dorky boyfriend named Greg who sings and plays piano.
