When Bette starts feeling old, she goes all-out to rejuvenate herself -- by singing Kid Rock songs and consulting with a plastic surgeon. Everyone assumes that it's because Danny DeVito's announced that he wants Bette to play his mother in an upcoming sitcom, but oblivious Bette has an entirely different reason for wanting to feel young again.moreless
  • Bette is a good bet.

Bette Midler plays a characture of her own persona. An actress struggling to stay in the game, a mother who sometimes reverts to being the child, a friend who's needy and needs constant reassurance of her devine-ness.

The tongue in cheek mishaps of Bette (like the references to Sally Field beating her for an oscar) are classic tv from an actress who seems to be almost too big for the small screen. But she makes it work.

The rest of the cast are what may be the downfall of the show. Joanna Gleason is usually fun to watch, although her tv series record is mostly regretable, but she and Bette play off each other very well.

The other actors (the husband, the daughter and the in-denial gay musician) are very bland in their roles. They are given some decent material to work with, they just don't know how to deliver. Or maybe they just are so outshined by Midler that they're dead before the gun goes off.

Hopefully they'll be able to find a way for the other actors to bring themselves up to par so they can get in there and play with the Devine one without looking like cadavers.

Bette Midler makes this well worth the watch, but when she's not in the center of the screen, it gets very very droll.moreless
