Music: Father Figure by George Michael
Nat is apparently home from his cruise (but still off-camera), as Steve mentioned calling him at the Peach Pit as he tried to learn Ryan's whereabouts.
Ryan's reappearance is largely due to the cancellation of the Aaron Spelling-produced soap opera Sunset Beach, which featured Randy Spelling.
Eddie Waitkus (1919-1972) is a real life baseball player, who made his debut in 1941, playing 1st base for the Chicago Cubs (1941; 1946-1948). He then played for the Philadelphia Phillies (1949-1953) and then the Baltimore Orioles (1954-1955), before ending his career as a second time Philly in 1955. Waitkus would become the inspiration for Bernard Malamud's 1952 book, The Natural. It would be adapted for film in 1984. This is the book that Dylan references when talking about the story he read with his father.
The episode title is from a line in George Michael's 1987 song "Father Figure".
