Originally I pegged this as one of weaker episodes, but upon further review, I'd say it's about what you can expect from Season 1. The story is actually kinda decent, but like a lot from Season 1, probably could've been stretched out a little more. Brandon meets a bright young girl named Melissa Coolidge, who's destined to get into Harvard. They go on a date, and then she has him meet her young surprise; her son named Joey. The episode gets entertaining when the babysitter bails, and Melissa dumps Joey off on Brandon for the afternoon. Brandon of course plays an excellent role of a clueless teenager boy with no idea on how to take care of a baby. Him screaming for Cindy 15 seconds after Melissa leaves always cracks me up. Meanwhile Brenda and Kelly's friendship gets cemented forever when they go skydiving together after winning the radio contest. Eventually everything comes to a head, and Melissa and Brandon part ways. Again, the story was nice, but I woulda liked to see Brandon and Melissa's relationship go a little further than it did, and maybe if this was Season 3 or even Season 2, they might have. As it is, it's a 2 or 3 episode story jammed into 1 episode. Normally I would give a nod to Cindy for MVC (along with Brandon of course) for yet another great "mom moment" with Melissa but because of the lack of historical significance, I can't in this circumstance... sorry Carol. MVC: Brandon (7)
Brandon meets a senior named Melissa and goes on a date with her. Melissa explains that it is weird dating someone who doesn't know her past. At the end of the night, Melissa takes Brandon in her house and introduces him to her sleeping infant. Brandon is shocked that she has a baby. After contemplating, Brandon decided to continue to date Melissa and spends an evening at the Peach Pit with Melissa and her baby. The next day Melissa shows up at the Walsh house and drops the kid off with Brandon because her babysitter bailed and she has an interview with a top notch ivy league college. Cindy and jim help Brandon at first but then leave, as does Brenda. Steve comes over to watch a game on TV and offers his help. Needless to say, Brandon learns a small amount of the work involved with having a child. Melissa blows her interview and stays out all night with Brandon, leaving the kid with her parents, even though they have to work. This leads to her being kicked out and re-evaluating her life. She considers giving the kid up for adoption but in the long run realizes her baby is more important and decides to spend more time with him.
Brandon's date with Melissa gives him the chance to experience the 'joys' of looking after a child, after her babysitter failed to arrive in time for her to go to her Harvard interview. She ends up rejected after they think it would be too difficult to study and look after the baby. Kelly and Brenda enter a radio contest and win a chance to skydive.
To me, this was a filler episode...there were no great revelations made or discovered, but the episode was decent. Brandon meets a girl who has a baby. He and Steve babysit for an afternoon. I thought it was ironic when Kelly, said, "Wouldn't it be weird to see Steve as a father?" When we all know that later on down the line, he will become one! Kelly and Brenda take skydiving lessons. They both fall in love with the handsome, older instructor. Again, nothing new. Brenda seems to always be falling in love with older men. I wonder what the draw is?
