  • Solid performances all around, a twinge of corniness, yet a nice little reminiscent on how teenage girls used to be back in the day.....

    Though I was in kindergarten when this episode aired and never got into the show when it aired on television, I thought I'd give it a shot when the first season debuted on DVD. After all, when you hear so many things about a contemporary classic, you can't help but be interested. The fact that I love Jennie Garth's performance opposite Amanda Bynes in the more recent comedy series "What I Like About You" is another reason I've started watching some episodes of this, and it's pretty interesting to see her from 17 years ago.

    All in all, this was a fun episode to watch, the interactions among the girls being especially interesting. It's unfortunate that you don't see too many 15-year-old girls anymore who can take a break from all the typical teenage boy drama and enjoy a slumber party, dancing freestyle in their pajamas, eating junk food, breaking out the Quija board, and just being kids. Anyway, as indicated by other reviewers here, Garth's performance is especially memorable, helping her character dig deeper and go beyond just the superficial, tightly-wound person she's originally perceived as. In a way, the episode is corny at times, although it was filmed back in 1991, so you have to figure that teen life was a little bit different more than a century and a half ago. What surprised me more than anything else was how willing Kelly, Andrea, Donna, and Brenda were with Amanda's little "Skeletons in the Closet" game. Are we supposed to believe that none of these girls, despite being so uncomfortable and hurt by what was going on, had the guts to speak up or, even more important, kick her out? Even worse, these four pals ended up saying some pretty nasty things to each other, with words like "pretentious" and "stuck-up" flying around the room at various times--and yet apparently, it never dawned on any of them that their so-called best friends actually thought those negative things about them. However, I suppose it was necessary to convey, on some level, how naive high school girls can be at this age. And of course, it all ends up well, with hugs and "I'm sorry's" all around, so maybe I shouldn't take it too seriously :)

    Setting all that aside, it's a great episode from the very early 90210 days, and it's pretty easy for females to connect with one or some of the characters as they recall their own high school experiences. I, for one, could relate pretty well with Andrea as she immediately denied having any romantic feelings for Brandon, and how she quickly made up a story about being in love with a cute lifeguard she once met, and all her friends can instantly tell she's lying. "Sure, Andrea--we believe you," Kelly says in that smirky little voice that Garth perfected on the show, and in that moment, I could really see myself being in a situation like that. One of the best episodes from Season 1, for sure, and although I can't comment on its quality against the rest of the series, I would recommend this one if you want to visit these characters' fresh, youthful days.moreless

    In this episode, we learn more about Kelly, Donna, Brenda & Andrea and that mysterious Amanda girl who Kelly invited. Kelly's deep monologue about her real first time with Ross, gave us the idea that kelly wasn't as superficial as she seems. Donna doesn't have much to say, but that she like putting popcorn on her ice cream, which surprisingly is not a disgusting combination. Brenda tells the girls about how she turned on a friend. I guess Brenda is not that innocent as she was in the first season. Brenda's character became relatively less innocent as the series progressed. Andrea fails to keep it a secret that if she could sleep with anyone it would be Brandon and not that lifeguard she mentioned. I found it significant how when asked if she had ever slept with someone she said not 'yet.' However, she does take three more years and two failed attempts with Brandon before she does, and that's only because they had to make her pregnant. Amanda is on diet pills, and the girls feel strongly about that.

    Brandon and Steve get their car stolen by two girls at a club. This one was pretty entertaining with them calling the police and the girls admitting to have taken a longer drive than expected. This isn't the first time one of their cars gets stolen. Ginger/Adrienne/Tina/Marla stole Brandon's in the season 3 episode She Came in Through the Bathroom Window.

    So in short, this could pass for one of the best episodes of the seriesmoreless

    Brenda decides to hold a slumber party with the girls, and it will be one of the more talked about events for years to come. Meanwhile Brandon and Steve go out on a night on the town and it's pretty fun. The Slumber Party is when many of the foundations are laid for future plots and twists, and is referenced even in the final episode of the series almost 9 years later. First off Kelly is the main star of this episode. She reveals the painful truth of our first time. A dude named Ross Weber took her behind the bushes an then never talked to her again. She also lays the seeds to what will be the storyline that takes this series to a whole new level, in that she reveals to Brenda that she asked Dylan out on a date after Brenda and Dylan had started to date. 2 years after this it wouldn't be that innocent. Donna also gets a little more camera time and her character starts to develop as the "innocent girl." Andrea also reveals that she is in love with Brandon... but everyone already knew that. Brandon and Steve meet up with 2 random girls at a club, and they proceed to scam them and take Steve's car for a little joy ride. This is the episode when Brandon and Steve's friendship is cemented forever. Just a great effort, and the first episode of the series to really show how much legs the show would eventually have.     Brenda invites Kelly, Donna and Andrea over for a girls night. All are scared it will be typecast as a slumber party (as they think they are too old for such a thing) but decide to go anyway. Kelly invites her friend Amanda, whom we have never met before. Steve and Brandon try to get into a club, but are rejected for being too young and meet up with two hot girls. The girls act as though they like the boys and then steal steve's car. As the night progresses, the slumber party gets interesting after dancing, singing and pigging out. Amanda, bored out of her mind and wanting Kelly to go with her to a frat party, suggests a game of skeletons in the closet. We learn that kelly lost her virginity to a senior football player her freshman year, against her will. Donna doesn't really have any secrets or problems. Brenda kissed her ex bestfriends boyfriend. Andrea has the hots for Brandon (who is shocked) and Amanda is a diet pill popper because she used to be chubby and never wants to get that way again.moreless

    I originally seen this episode on re-runs. This is a character development episode. We find out Kelly loses her virginity by being raped (she orginally says she lost it to Steve), Andrea tries to deny her attraction to Brandon (everyone else knows she does like him), Donna has no problems (not yet anyway), and Brenda confesses that her old bestfriend from Minnesota stole her boyfriend (a prediction for Dylan/Kelly?) We actually see Steve has a sensitive side. This is one of my favourite episodes from the first season, prior to the Prom Night episode. I like how Brandon says at the end of the episode that a lot of guys would like to be where he his.moreless
