Which one played a better part, Dick Sargent or Dick York?

    Yeah. I love Dick York.

There is a HUGE and ugly debate about this on the Elizabeth Montgomery page on IMDB. I was just reading it earlier today so I just HAD to respond to this post. lol

    Good timing!

Ironically, the role of Darrin was offered to Dick Sargent before it was given to Dick York but Sargent had a prior commitment, just as Tammy Grimes was similarly unavailable to play Samantha (originally to be called "Cassandra"). Also, about two seasons after "Bewitched" began, "The Tammy Grimes Show" premiered and lasted about a season. Dick Sargent played the brother of "Tammy," whose full first name was "Tamantha."

I remember the so-called "Darrin switch" during the show's first run. I was not traumatized by it but I did miss York.
For my money, Dick York was the better Darrin. York's chemistry with Montgomery really showed and I believe that was one of many important elements in the polularity and believability of the show.

Dick York. Although I thought Dick Sargent did pretty well, too.

Without a doubt, Dick York was better.  Granted, we saw him first, and if Sargeant wasn't busy, we wouldn't be having this conversation.  However, Dick York had much better chemistry and created a more "in love" feeling.  It's all about York!

I too would say that Dick York was the better Darrin, his chemistry with Elizabeth Montgomery was great. And his physical pratfalls, expressions and comic timing was the best there could be. Also his interactions with Endora were always hilarious! When I think of Bewitched, Dick York will always be the Darrin I picture beside Samantha. Dick Sargent did a fine job replacing Dick but there was always something "missing" about his performance, that being that he wasn't Dick York of course and his chemistry with Sam never seemed as "real" or "genuine" as Dick York's was with her!

Dick York of course. It takes a real actor to deliver 'I want my old face back!' right.

Obviously Dic York played the better part. But the thing that has been bugging me was to ask why they replaced him with Dick Sargent?
