Which one played a better part, Dick Sargent or Dick York?

Ok. I think both actors did a good job in different ways and I do like both Darrins. I know most people including my mum and dad and some of my friends prefer York and I agree that York has good chemistry with Elizabeth Montgomery. Yet, Sargent has always been my favourite Darrin because his Darrin is somehow gentler than York's and he seems more "fatherly". When Samantha asked "Are you challenging me?", York's Darrin would say "Yes, as a matter of fact I am" and Sargent's Darrin would say "yes". I suppose I can just connect better with Darrin II than Darrin I but both were good.

I know Wikipedia can't always be considered accurate and have not had the chance to verify this but... I just ran across this and thought I'd share it:

The show was a ratings success during its first five seasons, but it lost some viewers when Dick York, who had originated the role of Darrin Stephens, lost his ability to continue in the role due to a severe back condition, and a growing dependence on pain medications, and left the cast in 1969. While Ray Fulmer of Hazel, was mentioned as a possible replacement (as per an episode of The Virginia Graham Show, Fulmer's name was suggested to Agnes Moorehead by her friend and former co-star Shirley Booth), the role of Darrin went to Dick Sargent. Sargent's version of Darrin was a more acidic, smarmy character, in contrast to York's nervous, frantic portrayal. The drop in ratings was ironic in light of the fact that Sargent had been the original choice to play Darrin, but had been under contract elsewhere in 1964.

Yes but I can see I am in the minority. I do agree that York's Darrin has chemistry with Elizabeth but I still can't help liking Sarrgent's Darrin more.

Well, I always Dick York was the better of the two. But it might be a little unfair to Sargent, who was a decent character actor, because by the time he joined the cast, the show was already in decline. They had already started recycling plot lines even when York was still there. If you compare the early episodes to the later ones, you can tell that Elizabeth Montgomery is getting bored.

That's true. Still all the episodes are watchable and enjoyable but as the show went on some of the plot lines etc were repeated in a different way. Both Sargent and York were good in different ways though I'm one of the few who prefer Sargent.

Dick York. I really can't say I liked Sargent at all. York would say his lines with some feeling. Sargent looked like he was reading off of his hand.

    "Sam....no uh.....witch craft.....okay?"

I hate to say I am jumping on the bandwagon, but i like York better. I think he showed a more human Darren.

He was a kinder, gentler, Darrin. lol

Sargent was more of a wacky goofball.

According to someone who interviewed William Asher, Dick Sargent was never the choice for Darrin when Asher and Elizabeth Montgomery were involved with the show. Sargent was only under consideration when Tammy Grimes was (before Asher and Montgomery were on board). Dick York was always the Ashers' first choice. I forget who posted this originally, but it was on the HarpiesBizarre.com Bewitched website.

Either/or... I think I remembered more Sargent episodes from my childhood, so maybe I prefer his portrayal a bit better. But, honestly, neither of them seemed to make the role so "his" that the other one seemed wrong playing the part.

Yes, the debate rages on! lol

Regarding schmoe56789's comment... yes, I have heard or read that same info somewhere.
That Asher and Montgomery wanted Sgt but he was involved in another project at the time and couldn't take the part. They went with York but eventually his health problems became so bad that he had to leave at which point Sgt was available and they gave him the part. By then though, the show had been on the air for 5 or 6 seasons and was starting to drop in the ratings and it just continued to decline as did Asher/Montgomery's marriage. I believe the show WAS however offered another season but Montgomery wanted out to pursue other things after 8 seasons of being Samantha.
