Phyllis and Frank Stephens (Mabel Albertson and Robert F. Simon) have never met their daughter-in-law before and so, they are coming for a visit. Samantha hopes they like her but Darrin assures her that she has nothing to worry about. Meanwhile, Samantha's beloved Aunt Clara (Marion Lorne) decides to come and stay as well, and although Darrin doesn't think this is a good idea, Sam refuses to ask her dotty aunt to leave.

From the outset, it's clear that Phyllis Stephens is determined to find fault with Samantha, particularly in the areas of housekeeping and cooking which Samantha admits to being onlyh 'average' at. Aunt Clara, after a few false starts, manages to whip up Darrin's favorite meal and Phyllis can't help but be slightly impressed, but Frank, a very nice man, is delighted with Samantha and annoyed that Phyllis is being so embrrassing and difficult.

When Aunt Clara begins behaving in a way that makes Darrin uncomfortable, the old witch feels hurt and leaves. This makes Samantha furious and she and Darrin argue loudly, which is when Phyllis learns that Aunt Clara and not Samantha cooked the delicious meal. With Aunt Clara persuaded to return, Phliis admits that with Samanatha being so capable, she felt that she would be pushed out of Darrin's life and become obsolete. When she realises that this will not be the case, she warms to her daughter-in-law and we get the sense that all will be well.

A truly superb performance by Marion Lorne who is always so delightful in her role as Aunt Clara make this one of the funniest of the first season.moreless
