Young Johnny Miller is excited beyond measure that he has a chance to enter the local Soapbox Derby. He has built his racer himself in accordance with the rules and all he needs to be able to compete is his father's signature on the entry form but he is too scared to ask him as his father, a widower, is a mechanic who is barely making ends meet and is only interested in this and in Johnny going to medical school, not in Soapbox Derbys.
During a practice run, Samantha gets a little 'twitchy' and helps fix a wobbly wheel as he races against Gladys Kravitz's nephew whom, according to the bragging Gladys, is going to win the local and the state finals.
Samantha and Darrin both intercede in their own way. Samantha convinces Johnny's father not only to attend but also to come and watch his son race, which, he finally does. When Johnny ends up winning both the local and the state titles without any help from witchcraft, Darrin and Samantha are delighted and a young man now has a proper relationship with his father which was also achieved without magic.
A lovely, heartwarming episode and very well acted by all, particularly the guest stars.
