  • everyone else can make it to the cocktail party without magic so why can't we?

    9.0
Some of the cutest glam witchcraft is used in this episode in the intro, showing Samantha sped up, getting ready for a party including the magical placement of her wrapper over her shoulders. But then, she looks up and sees Darren's disapproving face. Why can't she, Samantha, get ready for the cocktail party without the use of magic?

That seems to be on Samantha's mind, showing the car in a pouing rain storm on the way to a client's home that Larry is attempting to lure to the McMann and Tate agency. Of course the rain storm is probably in the studio and is caused by squirting hoses, but the audience is unaware of this fact. The most intriguing part of this episode is a contrivance, a flat tire, which Sam could totally fix with magic. But Samantha is already on pins and needles after Darrin's disapproval, butshouldn'tshe fix the tire? Inevitably, Darren is stuck eating crow, and he'll end up changing the tire in the pouring rain.

The most fun part of this episode is their entrance at the cocktail party at the client's home. Naturally, Samantha is the epitome of sixties glamour in her black sheath down and black wrap . Darren on the other hand, is completely soaked through. Darren is offered a change of clothes, and then the client, Mr. Sharp, a small, waiflike man with a loud personality, begins to tell semi inappropriate stories, to the chagrin of the Mr. Sharp. But, they have a beautiful sixties home, and fans of 1960's glam will see some cute set design including a grand staircase. But Darren almost does not come down the staircase, because his change of clothes consist of a tiny dinner jacket and tiny pants. You've never seen anything so silly and inappropriate on Darren at this time in the show, and the dinner guests laugh and laugh at Darren. Of course Larry Tate has to join in, suck up that he is.

The boorish client, Mr. Sharp, has caused Darren disappointment and embarrassment, meanwhile, Larry tries to employ his domineering personality to get Darren to stay seated at the cocktail party wearing the tiny dinner suit. Will Darren live this off, or will he blow up at the Sharps? Surely, Samantha takes no pleasure in this, or does she, since it was her an action that caused Darrin embarrassing attire at the party?

Next, Darren is in for trouble when Larry refuses to back him up against Mr. Sharps in appropriate behavior, and Larry was Darren to apologize. Now Darren is forced to contend with another difficulty concerning Samantha's magic. He knows that the entire situation would have turned out fine had Samantha been the one to use witchcraft to fix the tire, leaving Darren in the car dry and ready for the cocktail party. Darren knows he must take the high road and continue to endure humiliation to get the account, which Larry continually remind him is worth $600,000.

Darren now agrees to continue to meet with Mr. Sharp, and now knows that he must use Samantha's witchcraft to secure from such predicaments as being left soaking wet after a rain storm. And as an afterthought, the writers cause Darren's car to nearly run out of gas with no gas station around for miles. At the very end, you'll see Samantha twitch a gas station into existence. Darren exclaims, "I've never seen that gas station before!" But you know that he knows it was Samantha all along.moreless
  • A flat tire causes a huge argument between Darrin and Samantha on the use of witchcraft.

    7.5
On their way to a formal event in pouring rain, the Stephens' car gets a flat tire. Samantha offers to change it using witchcraft but Darrin is adamant that she will not do so as he is once again on one of his anti-witchcraft kicks. Stubbornly, Darrin goes out into the storm and changes the tire, arriving at the elegant event looking like a drowned rat and needing to borrow clothes from the host which just happen to be about three sizes too small for him!

Samantha is really angry and upset about the whole thing and hopes that Darrin's unreasonable behavior will make her daughter leave her mortal husband for good but, of course, she doesn't, and when they go out to another formal evening and run out of gas, Darrin doesn't seem to mind a little witchcraft being used to remedy the situation.moreless
