BIONIC WOMAN
1.05 – THE EDUCATION OF JAIME SUMMERS
TEASER
At a military first aide station, a soldier sits up gets up from a cot, grabs a scalpel, and goes over to another soldier. He asks the man if he needs the doctor. He ignores him and stabs him. His attacker picks up his fallen gun. One man tries to calm him down. He ignores him and shoots everyone.
Jaime Sommers is sitting with her friends drinking margaritas. Her sister is there too. Jaime's friend is trying to set her up with a man, but Jaime says that she doesn't need a man in her life to make her happy.
On the news they are talking about the soldier's attack – he was a POW that had been held captive and feared dead for two months, and was set to ship home later that week. Suddenly Jaime gets a call from Jonas Bledsoe. He tells her that they have a situation.
Back at Berkut, Bledsoe shows Jaime and Antonio Pope a chip on his computer screen that is supposed to be a treatment for depression when it is implanted in the brain. He says that this particular neural transplant has some side effects. Three American soldiers, POWs that were held by an Al Qaeda cell, were all released and then suddenly made very specific attacks on their own men. Jaime comments they are like human car bombs. Antonio questions that they all had this neural implant. Bledsoe tells them that they don't know what it does, but do know where it came from - Professor Howard Samuels. He runs the country's most cutting edge lab that is developing the chips at Stanwick University. Jaime suggests they start by arresting Samuels, but Antonio tells her that they are not cops. Bledsoe says that Antonio will go after buyer and Jaime will go after the implant. He gives her a student ID, which lists her as Clarrisa White, born 2/23/1983. He tells her that she is going to college as a transfer from England. He asks her how her British accent is.
ACT ONE
Nathan gives Jaime books for the classes that she would have had to have taken as a basic transfer student in neurobiology - cellular neuroscience and systems neuroscience. She is offended that he is making it sound easy; it's a lot of information. She tells him that she was going to major in literature, and would have done her dissertation on James Joyce. She tells him that she can't fake math and science and will look like an idiot. He tells her that she can wear glasses and look smarter. She leaves. He says that he was just doing his job.
Jaime is on campus. She is in a lecture hall and is wearing glasses. In the middle of the lecture her cell phone rings, and Professor Samuels is not happy. He asks her a question he hopes she won't know in order to embarrass her. She doesn't know what to say until a guy walks by with a clipboard and drops a paper near her and she discretely reads the answer from it. She smiles at him.
Antonio talks to Ruth Truewell. They are looking through files at possible suspects. She thinks it could be Samad Nadeem, who has been obsessively looking at terrorist websites for fourteen months, took two of Samuels's classes, and became a practicing Muslim all in the same time period. Antonio tells her that that's racial profiling, but she thinks it's brilliant detective work.
Jaime is working on her neuroscience lab work. Her roommate tells her that she loved that class – it was an easy "A." Meanwhile, she has a paper on James Joyce due. She doesn't understand the book. Jaime likes the book and explains about it passionately. She asks Jaime to write the paper for her, and in exchange agrees to do her lab work. Her roommate then tells Jaime that there is a party later if she wants to go with her.
At the party, Jaime runs into the guy that gave her the answer in class - Tom Gilquist. He is Samuels's teaching assistant. Nathan, who is watching Jaime from Berkut, is obviously jealous. Jaime thanks Tom for helping her earlier, and he tells her that Samuels can be intimidating – he's a cranky old man. Tom buys her a drink. Nathan is talking to himself and saying that Tom is trying to get her drunk. Nathan calls her and she looks at her phone, which says it's an incoming call from the office. She turns it off. Tom questions that she must be lonely being so far from home. She tells him that she thinks it is exciting. She starts babbling. She asks about him and he tells her that he has been Samuels's TA for a semester, and that he is doing work that will make a difference. It was his work in neural imaging research that made him want to be his TA. His dad died of Parkinson's the previous year. Meanwhile, Nathan thinks it is a trick and is obviously becoming more jealous. He calls her again. She ignores it. Tom tells her that the diagnosis was a wake up call, as he had almost dropped out. Now he wants to be neurosurgeon and help people. Nathan is angry she won't answer so he makes her bionic ear hurt. She tells Tom she has an earache and left her drops at home. She excuses herself.
She calls Nathan and tells him he is an ass. He tells her that the changeover for the lab is in five minutes. She says she knows what time it is, and claims she was doing recon. Nathan tells her that Tom wants to be on top of her. He tells her to get her head in the game and to get to the museum. He tells her that she should see a ladder to the roof.
JAIME: There's no ladder. Okay, what's plan "B?"
NATHAN: Um, plan "B" is you're bionic. Figure it out.
She jumps but doesn't land well. He asks if she is okay, and she tells him that hanging on to her cell phone messed her up.
NATHAN: So typical in this place, they spend fifty million dollars on you and then won't spring for a Bluetooth.
He tells her that he thinks Tom's story was crap. She says that he is so cynical and it's not attractive. He tells her that you can't believe everything everyone says, and she says that not everyone wants to screw with you.
She runs and jumps to the roof of the next building. He tells her that that might be a good attitude to have – if she wasn't a spy. He asks her why she is not in the lab yet. She says she's going as fast as she can.
She gets to the skylight and tells him that the glass is wired. He says that it's an analog circuit, and they can override it easy, and for her to find the contacts.
NATHAN: By the way, why are you using the accent with me?
JAIME: I'm a method actor.
NATHAN: Fine by me it's literally the hottest thing ever.
She finds them and he tells her that she has to put something metal between the contact points like a paperclip or something to stop the circuit from breaking. She rips off part of a steel bar. That will work too.
Jaime drops in and he gives her the code to open the door.
He tells her to scan the computer for dirt on Samuels.
JAIME: So, I'm a glorified fax machine?
NATHAN: Come on, don't sell yourself short, you can also open cans.
They need to find out who Samuels may have contacted about the implants. She tells him he is a pioneer of Parkinson's simulation. She finds something on synthetic neural transducers. He tells her that is good and to get out of there. She stops to read a file on Tom. Suddenly Professor Samuels and another man walk in. Samuels tells her that he knows who she is.
ACT TWO
Samuels thinks she is part of a pharmaceutical company, trying to steal information. She denies it and tells him that she made an idiot of herself in class and someone told her if she wanted to get back in his good books to clean out the monkey cages, but now realizes they were joking. Meanwhile Tom is walking towards them and hears what is going on. Samuels asks her how she got past security. She tells him that the door was unlocked. Tom comes in and questions that she didn't actually go to clean the monkey cages. Tom says that he told her to do that and was also the one who left the door unlocked. He forgot his papers to grade and came back to get them, and was back again now, because he realized that he left the door unlocked. He tells him that it won't happen again. Samuels tells him to escort "Miss White" out, and tells her that he is watching her. After, Tom asks her what she was actually doing. She tells him that she was trying to get a copy of the lecture she needed help with. He tells her that he can help her with that, for a price. He wants to have dinner with her the next night. He kisses her on the cheek.
Antonio is on a stakeout listening. He is watching Nadeem and a woman eat dinner. He talks to Truewell, saying that he doesn't think it is anything. Then Nadeem's phone rings. He talks about meeting someone and getting paid. Antonio tells her to get backup as they are going to need someone on him 24/7.
In class, Samuels talks about the mapping of the brain. He goes into a glass room to a guy who is sitting near monitors. He is holding his hand out steady. Shawn, who is behind the computer, says that before the subject received the implant, his tremors were so bad that he couldn't hold a fork and knife or drive a car. He then tells them to watch and hits some keys and the guy picks up balls and starts to juggle. Jaime doesn't see what is so great about him juggling. Shawn explains that the implant not only reroutes pathways but acts as a receiver. Tom tells Jaime that he sent a signal to him to juggle and he juggles. Shawn tells her that what he is doing is totally involuntary, and they can make him do anything. He pushes more keys. He tells her that when the computer takes over his body, he can be more coordinated and capable than he was before. He gets him to put his hand over a torch flame and keep it there. Jaime tells him to stop. He does, but says that they modified his pain tolerance too.
Back at Berkut, Antonio talks with Nathan. Nathan tells him that Samuels hasn't made any modifications to the application, he is just treating Parkinson's. Antonio suggests that maybe he isn't the guy. Antonio asks about Tom.
NATHAN: Oh, it's the TA who's trying to get into Jaime's pants.
ANTONIO: Really?
NATHAN: I know. It's like keep your grubby hands off of our fifty million dollar piece of—
ANTONIO: Hey!
He stops with that and continues on to tell Antonio that Tom did his undergraduate at Stanford and majored in cognitive neural system sciences. Antonio tells him that he went to Stanford.
Jaime talks to Tom about technology and says that it is creepy mind control. He tells her that there is the possibility for abusing is. He changes the subject to talk about her. He questions that she is only staying one semester, and says that he guesses that he has to work fast then. He knows he is bold, and tells her just to tell him if he has to slow down. They talk and he laughs at her when she gets foam from her drink on her nose. He then kisses her until Antonio walks up and interrupts them. Jaime introduces him as her uncle Tony. He tells Tom that he knows it confuses people, him being an American and all. She questions that he is not at work, and he says that he needs a word with her, and that it is important. Tom tells her that he will see her at dinner at eight. He leaves.
Jaime asks Antonio what that was about. He tells her that they think Samuels is clean but Tom is under some scrutiny. He only has a paper trail for the past six years, and before that, nothing. He tells her that Tom says that he majored in cognitive neural system sciences at Stanford, but that degree doesn't exist. She questions that it is important that he lied in his application, as a lot of people do. He tells her that they have to assume that he is the enemy. Jaime tells him that her gut tells her that he has nothing to do with it. Antonio says that the last time she listened to her gut about a guy, he had her limbs replaced. She walks away.
Jaime is back in her room talking to her roommate and eating cookies. Jaime's phone rings – it's Tom. He says that they should have a post first kiss caucus. She tells him that it was great and that they should do it again some time. He questions what she is doing, but she tells him that she has to get a book she needs on neuroscience, but will still meet him at eight. She hangs up and her roommate says that she "totally likes him."
Jaime is walking alone when she hears something. She looks with her bionic eye but doesn't see anything. She continues walking and then hears footsteps. She walks slowly. Someone comes up behind her with a gun. She knocks the gun away and they fight. She eventually kicks him against a pole. He tries to get up and she tells him to stop, that he has no idea what she can do to him. He tells her that he can't stop himself and asks her to help him. He pulls his hood back. It was the guy with Parkinson's from earlier that Samuels was testing the implant on.
ACT THREE
Jaime looks at the implant. Nathan says that it matches the one that was pulled out of the soldier in Iraq. Bledsoe tells her that they think that he will be all right. Antonio asks who know where she was going, and she admits that Tom did. Bledsoe wants to pull her out. She doesn't want to quit. She tells them that they will not get anyone closer than her.
At dinner, Tom asks her how her sushi is, and she admits that she doesn't really like sushi, and he admits the same. He tells her that she seems stressed and a little preoccupied, but then apologizes, thinking it sounded like an insult. He tells her that she looks beautiful. They decide to leave the restaurant together.
Jaime ends up making out with Tom on his couch. She stops him, asking if he has some champagne, and he tells her that he will go get some. He leaves.
Jaime bionically scans the room and starts going through his stuff. She looks at a photograph album and through a cabinet, and finding nothing says that he is too good to be true. When she finds tarragon in a drawer she says that he is the perfect guy – too perfect. She opens it and finds an implant.
She leaves with it, and talks to Bledsoe on the phone. He says they'll know if it is the same chip after Nathan runs some tests on it, and they will keep him under observation. She tells him that Tom is going to want to know what happened to her and the microchip. He tells her just to sit tight, and that they have her dorm room wired. She gets a text message from Tom asking where she is at.
Antonio and another man are watching and following Nadeem. He enters a hotel and one of the guys follows him in. They follow. They break in and grab him and handcuff him. Antonio asks him what he is doing there, and he says that his brother lives there and he is just dropping off his iPod. Antonio sees an Alice and Wonderland book. He opens it – it is fake and contains a hole for transporting the chips. He asks Nadeem who gives the supplies to him. He denies knowing anything, so Antonio pulls a gun on him and tries to get him to answer. He yells at him that he is talking about the American soldiers that he is participating in murdering. He won't answer him, and just starts praying. Antonio sees a newspaper article about a mother and child who were killed in an AI Anbar IED attack. He picks up a photo and shows it to Nadeem, asking him if that is his family and if that is why he did what he did. Antonio tells him that he is killing innocent men, and to tell him where the drop is, and no one else needs to get hurt by this. He tells him that too many people have died on both sides. He stops praying. Antonio says for them to just end it there.
Jaime is sitting outside at the campus, watching couples. Bledsoe calls her and tells her that the chip is a match and that Antonio found out where the drop is at and they are on their way. He tells her to follow him and not let him make the drop, and to kill him if she has to. She sees Tom and follows him.
ACT FOUR
Jaime follows him and watches him give a man an envelope. Tom tells him that they are the answers to the final. She goes to man and takes the envelope from him. Inside is a file with a neurobiology test. Tom comes up to her, wanting to know who she is and why she is following him. He guesses that she is FBI, and she tells him that she is not. Tom tells her that she is supposed to leave it to them. She guesses that he is with the CIA. He asks again who she is, and she tells him that she is with the Berkut group. He says that they are arrogant and always getting in their way. She tells him that it is just a temporary thing. Both of them thought each other was the "bad guy." He questions that the Berkut group had her investigating him. She tells him it was first Samuels, and them him. He questions that that is why she went out with him. She admits that it was, but not at first. He tells her that that sucks. She asks him why he wanted to go out with her, and he tells her that he thought she might have been the buyer. She tells him that it is the same thing, but he says it isn't – he marked her off of his list. He stops what he is saying, realizing that her accent is gone.
JAIME: I'm not really from England.
TOM: Hmm, that's disappointing. I loved the way you said "brilliant," it was really a selling point, turning me on.
JAIME: Yeah well you wanting to be a neurosurgeon was a big turn on and selling point for me, and that was crap, right?
TOM: Yeah. Your name's not Clarissa is it?
JAIME: You're not Tom.
Jaime suddenly hears men talking about the drop. They look down and it is Shawn from class. He tells Jaime that he will go down and for her to stay there and cover him. She tells him not to understate her. He tells her to relax, that he is trying to be chivalrous. She watches him approach Shawn. He has a gun and tells Shawn to drop the bag. Jaime sees a guy behind them aiming a gun at him. She runs and jumps, knocking "Tom" out of the way, and one of the other men get hit. Jaime and "Tom" fight the group of men that was there. Meanwhile, the one man is getting away. The other man is on top of "Tom," punching him in the face. Antonio comes up behind the man with a gun and pulls him away. Jaime walks up, and "Tom" asks where Shawn is at. She sees him running and throws a melon at him and knocks him out.
TOM: How did you do that?
JAIME: Top secret.
Bledsoe asks Jaime if she is all right. She tells him that she is good. Then Antonio walks up and Jaime asks him why Shawn did it. He tells her it was for the money. She asks him why the CIA hates Berkut so much. He thinks that they are jealous - they do what the military, FBI, and CIA can't. They don't have any red tape or bureaucracy. They get things done. She sees "Tom" below, and they look at each other. Antonio tells her that it's not a good idea. He walks away and she looks again. Shawn is forced into a police car.
Back in the dorm, Jaime's roommate says that she can't believe Jaime is leaving. She tells her she is going back to England for a family emergency. Her roommate says that that is too bad – she was her favorite roommate. She hands Jaime the paper she wrote, and tells her that she got an "A." Now the professor wants her apply to a graduate program and she doesn't know how get out of that. She tells Jaime to keep the paper and then leaves.
Jaime goes to "Tom's" house. She is indecisive and turns around and turns back a few times. She starts to walk away again when she sees "Tom." He asks where she is going and she jokes she is casing the joint. She tells him that she wanted to see how he was. He tells her to come in and she can help him pack.
While sitting on the floor packing, he tells her that he joined the army after high school, and they sent him to college, trained him, and put him right in the field. He tells her that people trust his face. He asks about her and says that she has got quite an arm. She says that she doesn't want to talk about it, and asks if they can just hang out and pretend to be normal. He tells her they can and then goes to kiss her, but stops. He tells her that he doesn't even know his name. She tells him and then they kiss.
