In the scene when Dinah is walking into the "No Man's Land" bar, it is early evening, but still when Oracle contacts Huntress telling her that she found Dinah (after receiving an e-mail from Gibson, which was send barely 5 minutes after Dinah walked in), it is night time... how can this be?? Is Oracle's computer so slow that it took several hours for her to receive the e-mail????
Did they actually find Black Canary's remains at the warehouse after the explosion? This is never stated, but otherwise it seems odd they assume she was killed, particularly since non-metahuman Hawke somehow managed to survive.
When Helena visits Jesse at the police station squad room, absolutely no one is there. In a major crime-ridden city like New Gotham there are no other policemen around?
So Gibson remembers everything he's ever seen and heard...except where he put down his autograph pen?
Why is Black Canary so insistent that Dinah pack up and leave town? Oracle couldn't figure out Dinah was BC's daughter despite knowing they had the same name and were both metahumans - how the heck is Hawke going to figure it out? (Maybe BC is just being overly protective, but it still seems odd...)
Barbara says she had no idea that Black Canary had a daughter, or that Dinah was that daughter. This doesn't make much sense - Dinah gave her name in the premiere as "Dinah Lance" and Barbara did a check under that name as well as Dinah's adopted parents' name. Barbara apparently knows, prior to this episode, that Black Canary's name is "Carolyn Lance." So Oracle didn't come up with the slightest clue that two metahumans with the last name "Lance" with blonde hair might be related?
Dinah knows who "Black Canary" is, but immediately after she says so, she asks, "What's a Canary Cry?", which is BC's distinctive trademark in this episode and everyone else knows about it. How can Dinah know everything else about the pioneering female hero but not know what her (very loud) metahuman power is?
The "New Gotham Station" that we see here as Black Canary arrives in town is not the same "New Gotham Station" that Dinah arrived at in the premiere.
It's not entirely clear - how does Helena recognize Carolyn Lance on sight as Black Canary? Didn't Black Canary wear a mask or something, or does she just wander around without a mask like Helena does? (In the comics, that is what Black Canary does and nobody recognizes her, but still...) Maybe Barbara showed her a picture...but then wouldn't she have shown Dinah the same picture during her Superhero 101 training and wouldn't Dinah have made the connection then? Just seems like an awkward scene.
Carolyn: The life you think you want, Dinah, being a superhero, is not what it's cracked up to be. It's dangerous, it's ugly, it is relentless and it will wear you down. I won't let you throw your future away.
Dinah: Oh, yeah? Well, you gave up the right to make decisions for me a long time ago.
Dinah: (about her mom) So, she could fight, she could cry, she could take on lions, tigers and bears. When it comes to one tiny little kid, she runs for the hills?!
Helena: (to Dinah) You're the Black Canary's daughter?
Barbara: (to Carolyn) You have a daughter?
Dinah: (to Carolyn) You're the Black Canary?
Reese: I told you to stay out of it.
Helena: Yeah, well, I forgot. Kinda egotistical to think you could take them on alone.
Reese: Ooh, says the lone vigilante.
Helena: I know you think that was supposed to be an insult, so I'll go ahead and be offended.
Hawke: I found my soul the day my father left this earth.
Carolyn: Really? Sounds more like you found the self-help section in the bookstore.
Street Thug: Can I have a second chance?
Hawke: Not unless you believe in reincarnation.
Frankie: Don't worry - I'll get her.
Hawke: If it's meant to be. And Frankie - make sure it's meant to be.
Barbara: I don't think we should interfere.
Helena: We interfere for a living.
Gibson: Some people get all the best powers.
Barbara: Canary and your mom never really got along. I think it was some sort of bird-cat thing.
Reese: Stay out of it.
Helena: Second person who's said that to me today. I was sick of it the first time.
Reese: And you called me egotistical.
Helena: I said "egotistical." But I was thinking "idiotic."
Helena: (talking about Black Canary) I always thought she'd be taller, being a legend and all.
Gibson: Hello there, friend of the beautiful creature that is Huntress. I trust you bring news of her burgeoning desire for the Gibson.
Dinah: Actually, I was just in the neighborhood.
Gibson: Right. 51,563 minutes of unrequited love.
Gibson: I remember my mother's womb. No doubt the root of my claustrophobia.
Carolyn: You know, I hope you're just a pickpocket, or I'd have to hurt you.
In early publicity for the series, the daughter was described as being Black Canary herself, which led to protests from fans of the comic book character. Subsequently the series made it clear that the girl was not Black Canary. This was the episode to explain that.
The actual Black Canary character in the DC comics was named Dinah Lance and had the sonic cry. There were actually two of them, one a mother and the other a daughter, both named Dinah and both bore the title Black Canary. There was never a Carolyn Lance and neither had any kind of telepathic or telekinetic ability.
German title: "Black Canary"
The script was written to show that Carolyn survived and passed the title of Black Canary on to Dinah. Later, the scene was shot where Barbara gave Dinah the title instead, saying her mother would have wanted it. It was cut anyway.
Hans Tobeason, co-executive producer, said that they fully intended to bring Carolyn back, because she was really alive. Unfortunately, the show was cancelled before this could happen.
In the comic books, "Hawke" is the last name of the son of Green Arrow...who has a long-term romance with the comic book Black Canary (although the son isn't hers).
Despite being billed as regulars, Mia Sara and Ian Abercrombie don't appear in this episode.
Dinah: She could take on lions, tigers and bears.
Reference to the line "Lions and tigers and bears! Oh, my!" from the movie The Wizard of Oz.
