Andromeda

Volume 5.3

The latest in a slew of Andromeda releases brings us back once again to the epic tale of Captain Dylan Hunt and his immense starship. Once famed for his triumphant role in USA's Hercules: The Legendary Journeys, Kevin Sorbo astonished audiences a second time with his magnificent portrayal of the brave Captain Hunt, who awoke from a cryogenically induced sleep to find that three centuries had slipped by. Andromeda followed Hunt and his faithful crew as they struggled to reinstate the fallen Commonwealth of galaxies and restore order to a faltering universe.

This two-disc DVD set includes four 60-minute episodes from the middle of Andromeda's fifth and last season. "Through a Glass Darkly" shows a presumed-dead friend returning to save the Seefra-5; "Pride Before the Fall" brings Beka some frightening ...

We'd rather remember the show fondly; while it's still got fresh storylines left.

Shameless Should Quit While It's Ahead

We Brits have an awful habit of renewing shows past their prime. Take The Bill for example: its dwindling audience figures prove it should have been axed far earlier than ITV's fiscal downfall. Our memories would be far more favourable if, like Fawlty Towers or Black Books, its heyday was all we could look back on. For outrageous family drama Shameless, we fear for a similar fate. Its seventh (yes, seventh) season concludes on Channel 4 tonight in a finale full of unanswered questions. Shameless warrants, nay demands, another season, but how much further can it go?

Frank Gallagher, the show's leading foul-mouthed father, lures and looses a new woman almost every season. While these relationships, and their affect on his children, used to be the main focus of the show the producers have wisely moved away from this, keeping the series varied enough to still entertain. Lust ...

We've got quite a haul to choose from this week. There are some classic animated offerings with Duck Tales, Chip 'n Dale Rescue Rangers, and The Gummi Bears. While the older crowd will appreciate the macabre drama of the complete Six Feet Under series, the meticulous suspense of CSI, and the goofball humor of 3rd Rock From the Sun.

Black Books is a second-hand bookshop in London run by an Irishman named Bernard Black. He is probably the planet's least-suited person to run such an establishment: he makes no effort to sell, closes at strange hours on a whim, is in a perpetual alcoholic stupor, abhors his customers (sometimes physically abusing them) and is often comatose at his desk. Help comes in the lumpy shape of Manny Bianco, a hairy, bumbling individual who becomes Bernard's assistant. Manny is not exactly great at the job either but he is a million times better than Bernard. Next door is Fran, an anxious, frustrated woman who runs a sort of new-age shop selling the most unlikely bits of arty junk. Fran is friends with Bernard and, through him, with Manny; together the trio become embroiled in escapades that are sometimes extreme, fantastically ludicrous, and always bizarre. The show has won two BAFTA awards and one Bronze Rose award.moreless
