Black Books: Favourite Character?

I think like many it's a toss up between Bernard and Manny, but I think I have to choose Manny, Bill Bailey is just so funny. Also he's from my neck of the woods in the UK.

Manny is my favorite as well. His hair, his ideas, his behavior, this actor is just genious!

Ooh, that's not fair. Don't make me choose! lol. i have to say bernard. Bernard can just be so cute sometimes. i know he's obnoxious most of the time but Dylan Moran just plays him so well. and his incapability to look after himself reminds me of a 3 year old, which is what makes him so adorable. And Manny is awesome too but i'd have to say Bernard is my fave. He just makes the show what it is.

Mind you, i don't think we should leave Fran out entirely. She does have her moments.

i like them all fran as you are right has her moments but i dont think she is the best manny and bernard rule though bernard is weird but he is good and manny is soooooooo funny.

Manny is funny, but Bernard is more witty, sarcastic and subtle, he has drunken character ramblings and dry one liners - multi-faceted humour. Manny seems to use the 'oddball' angle constantly.

Bernard gets my vote.

Manny and Bernard are quality; with their best bit is when
they write that childrens book. Both of their skills come out here. I think in
my eyes they are equally as good as each other for many different reasons, so
my judgement comes down to the battle of the hair. Both fantastic but Manny's
hair wins by a fair margin.

LOL. the Hair is fantastic! I love Bernard's 'lets swoosh all my hair over to one side and give a cheesy smile'. And i agree about the children's book scene from Elephants and Hens. I think i put a couple of quotes in from that scene on this site. they're just classic.

I don't know how you can choose between the three because all three characters are different!
Fran isn't as funny as Bernard or Manny but she holds the series together... and having them all different means you can't really choose between them... and they're all equal!

sure, he may not be a regular, but my favorite episode is the "grapes of wrath" one in the first season. The "Clean Guy" is so damn funny, especially when he slides right up on Bernard in the close up shot.

Nah, Bernard is still the biggest ledge, although Bill Bailey does provide some fairly stiff competition.

OMG I was having an argument with myself the other day about this. I found myself going round in circles until I came to the conclusion that all 3 are my favourite. I think Fran is right up there with the other two. At first I thought nah, it's definetly the boys that provide most of the comedy but then I remember Fran lines/scenes that make me wet myself (when she's talking about the "summer girls" - "they're all 'hiiiii' and 'hellooo'") and realise that what makes the show so funny is the way the characters are intergrated. Remove one of them and the show would falter.

I find Manny the funniest by a mile...with Fran a log way behind Bernard. That said, Black Books is one of my all time favourite shows.

I'd say Bernard. Don't get me wrong, Bill Bailey is hilarious regardless of what he does. But Bernard is just so.. real. You know that people like Bernard exist and it's just so funny to watch Dylan Moran play up those characteristics.

All three are hilarious but as a dead heat between Manny and "Bern", I'd have to go with Bernard for his hilarious drunken lines and insane moments (My oven can cook anything. It can even cook bits of oven!)

but they're all hilarious when they are together. Manny would be second, just because he sometimes annoys me. Bernard is a messed up comic genius though.
