  • An unexpected pleasure of action, adventure, and fun.

I'm watching Black Lagoon for the first time via Cartoon Network's Saturday/Sunday night "Adult Swim," and really wasn't expecting very much. Why? The previews didn't do this series justice in anyway shape or form! By the time the end credits rolled, I was excited, cheering, and happy all at the same time. If the other episodes are as good as this one, well, this is one outstanding series!

Thus far Rock's adventure has been fun and the way I would hope to see it. The real truth will be how well the action and adventure continues in the second episode. While I could "look ahead via the web," at this point I want to see how it turns out through the old fashion way, "by watching My hope is the Black Lagoon team is as self serving as I hope and they'll copy the disc as insurance and maybe even future blackmail (in case they need getaway money).

As for Rock, the ending of this episode gives me real hope we'll see what makes him special and a value to the team. All I know is I think he'll bring the group the balance they're missing. My hope is he's a great on the spot planner who can see solutions where other can't in the same time frame. After all how does an old PT boat defeat a modern (to the time period) gun ship? Superior and quick planning is how!

Another hope for Rock (before the end of the series) gets back at his employers for leaving him out to dry, declaring him dead, etc. I'm not sure if they writers will address this before the end, but it would be great to see. It might also give us a chance to see his family and friends, as he wraps up his old life and returns to his new one (at some point).

In any case, you can't go wrong in spending an half hour watching this episode and giving the series a chance.

One last note / observations, during the opening credits the series reminded me of "Cowboy Bebop," and it still does but now because of the action and not the settings or characters. So, if you're a "Cowboy Bebop" fan do yourself a favor and give this series a look see. I know I'm glad I did it.

As always, I round up my ratings. Since went from the .1 to .5 increments, anything from 9.51 up becomes a 10. I'd rate this a 9.6 to 9.8 and thus round it up to 10.0. No, its not perfect, but its not a 9.5 either and . . . well, you get it, right?! ;-)moreless
  • Okajima Rokuro who works for Asashi Industries is held as a hostage by the pirates, mercenary team of Black Lagoon.

Only in Anime could this be made it be way too much money to create something like this on Live Action TV not too mention it probably be crappy. Black Lagoon is a memorable action anime adventure series about this pirate group of men and women who beat to their own drum.

There's lots of action, adult humor, adult dialogue, shots at the corporate culture, and many other things. The production of this thing is top notch like other Animes. The premise in the first episode is that Okajima Rokuro (aka Rock) is a nerdy executive taking hostage by the Black Lagoon. He carries a special disk which has a lot of top secret information. Through the series, Okajima undergoes a transformation from his dead end life to this one of being a pirate.

There's a lot of laughs here but a lot of drama as well. The writers on this show make the situation as realistic as they can including shots at the corporate world. Okajima's bosses at Akashi Industries don't give a crap about him, they merely see his situation as a nuisance to the real important matter of maintaining their trade secrets which gets exposed here.

The pirates who are Benny, Levi, Dutch starr off as the usual bonehead thugs you'd see in a million crime movies but eventually they do warmup to Rock. They eventually do see him a guy with a smart head on his shoulders.

The series takes on a lot of different turns and it's funny to see how the team manages to get themselves out of one situation to the next.moreless
