  • Slow story development

    5.0
It's obvious that a lot of effort has been put into the production of this series. Just wish they'd spent some money on the script as well. Story development is extremely slow and I really don't care much for any of the characters involved.
  • Standard Fare

    4.5
Black Sails has all the right elements: Pirates, treasure, treasure map, booty, mutiny and skullduggery but the end result is rather flat. The characters are not very endearing. Toby Stephens is either miscast or simply not a very convincing Pirate. The lesbian relationship seems gratuitous and the angst concerning trade and it's future are not very good hooks to attract attention for future episodes.

Trivia, Notes, Quotes and Allusions

FILTER BY TYPE

  • TRIVIA (2)

    • Mr. Scott tells Eleanor that the Captain of the Carolina has brought a fluyt's worth of rare silks.  A fluyt was a type of Dutch cargo ship.

    • Frasier, the appraiser, tells Captain Naft that one of the paintings is by Adriaen Hanneman.  He was a 17th century Dutch painter known for his portraits of British and Dutch nobility.

  • QUOTES (3)

    • Mr. Scott: You walked away from me last night and did something very foolish to a man whose temper you can no longer afford to provoke.
Eleanor: He moved on Flint. I responded.
Mr. Scott: And what did that accomplish?
Eleanor: It made me feel better.
Mr. Scott: Eleanor, you can never forget who these men are. They are not our friends. They are not our subjects. They want your father's business. That is the only reason we do not find knives at our throats.

    • Captain Naft: Fruit. Fruit. Tits. Tits. Plant. Plant. It's the fucking same!

    • Flint: (To Mr. Scott) You have your doubts?
Mr. Scott: Of turning pirates into farmers and soldiers? Of fighting a war against Whitehall from a sliver in the Atlantic? Doubt, Captain Flint, does not begin to describe how I am feeling.
