upon returning from a mission, the squadron finds out that Larry had submitted a mention of Don's 4th victory to his hometown newspaper in New Jersey, not knowing that Don's own father was the publisher. Don's father made a big deal about it by sending a reporter and a photographer to do a story, and subsequently showing up on the island himself to be there when his became an "ace" on his way to interview General MacArthur. On the next mission, French's attempts to appease his overeager father and get his fifth kill endangers the rest of the Black Sheep, and he later has to explain to Pappy that he is under pressure from his father, just trying to get the fifth kill to get rid of him.
the next day, Don does get a "kill", but it is unconfirmed, and his father tries to pressure Pappy to confirm it, but Don earns his commander's respect by waiting to do it on his own terms.
Pappy has a talk with Don's father and threatens to ground Don if he doesn't leave - the mission for that day is a bomber escort, and Don is again distracted from his role as a team member in the aerial combat that ensued, and his wingman, Lt. Carter, is shot down.
when they get back to base, the other members of the Black Sheep go to Pappy to tell them that they don't want to be his wingman on the mission the next day. Pappy gives them a stern reminder that he makes those decisions, not them, and encourages them to help him relax, and not treat him like a "leper".
Pappy finds out that Harold French has gone over Pappy's head, being a friend of Col. Lard, Pappy's "boss", but after an drunken altercation with Pappy in the Sheep's Pen (bar), French and Pappy have a man-to-man discussion, and Don confesses that he has always had a problem with his father.
Don has a discussion with his father himself, and gets him to leave so he can concentrate on his job, and staying alive, instead of playing the game of numbers that is endangering the whole unit. Harold French finally leaves the next morning.
in the "newsreel" at the end, Don French finally achieves his fifth victory.
