The real Black Sheep Squadron flew their first mission on September 14th, 1943 to Ballale. They were escorting Dauntless dive bombers.
When Pappy is looking through the files of pilots to be court-martialed, he opens one with the name James F. Gutterman. But when Casey calls roll outside the Officer's Club, he calls for "Gutterman, James W.". I believe that I have seen the "W" given as his middle initial in other places...so I guess officially its "W" but there's a typo in his file.
The Black Sheep's airstrip was located at Indian Dunes Airport in Valencia, CA in the middle of the Indian Dunes Motocross Park.
Boyle in the pilot episodes of Flying Misfits Part 1 and Part 2 is not played Larry Manetti who is generally credited with the role.
Credit for the television story and teleplay are given to Stephen J. Cannell. Listed after this is: Inspired by the book by: Gregory "Pappy" Boyington.
