This episode is a favorite of many fans, despite the fact that one of the lead characters is killed. \"hutch\", popular with the pilots of the 214, has been supplanted by a tough older veteran line chief, who creates kind of a havoc in previous episodes by bullying the men, including Pappy, and doing things his way. e.g. Having the pilots work on their own planes at 1 in the morning, or beating up the resident tough guy, Exec .Off. Gutterman. In this episode, however, he is compassionate. Near the beginning of the episode, a Japanese strafing attack on Vella La Cava nearly decimates the squadrons\' planes and fuel. Pappy and another pilot take off to pursue the attackers hoping to see where they originate from and end the daily invasions. while they are in the air, the last Zero fighter strafes the runway and kills Hutch who had just helped Pappy unjam his canopy. After the pursuit, which was unsuccesful, Pappy lands and is told of Hutch\'s death. This was by far one of the most dramatic moments in the shows history as audience membeers realize hutch, who up till a few episodes before, was more or less a major part of the filming on the island set, with more than 5 lines in many episodes, was gone now. As in a real war. The squadron is re-located back to the rear area and their names are re-inserted into the pilots pool, (meaning that they would be re-assigned to other squadrons as the slots become available) The Pacific theatre is quiet at the moment, So, No more Black Sheep. Pappy, who has been re-assigned as a flight instructor for new pilots, has a plan to get his boys back on Vella La Cava and their status as a squdron re-inserted, but first, he\'s gotta keep his Black Sheep out of the brig..........moreless
