Near the end, when the Japanese are overrunning 'England' Peter says, "We'll go down to the beach and escape in the duck". But he doesn't know that Greg was able to appropriate the duck, as far as anyone on England knows, they will be picked up by submarine later in the day. Then when the four are near the beach Jeb hears the engines of the approaching duck. And when they see it Peter yells "They got the duck!" as if he is surprised to see it.

Major Boyington assumed command in August 1943 of VMF-214. The VMF-214 second combat tour ended on January 8, 1944. This occurred five days after the Japanese shot down and captured Major Boyington.

The disabled Night Corsair (the one with the radome, allegedly) comes in for a landing on Vella La Cava... Except that it's missing the radome. After it lands, the camera zooms in on the plane, and now it mysteriously sports the all-important radome. Talk about yer "ghost readout"! :-)

Major Boyington commanded the VMF-21 from August 1943 till January 3, 1944 when the Japanese shot him down. Five days later on the eighth the VMF-214 second combat tour end. The group reformed back in the United State later that month.

When Casey is taking the physical fitness test, Sergeant Savage refers to him as Lt. Casey. When Casey is taking his written test, he's written his name at the top of the test "Lt. Larry Casey." At the end of the episode when Casey contacts San Francisco on the radio, he's clearly wearing captain's bars on his left collar.

Goof: Two date goofs.
In the pigs pen, the calendar board shows the year as 1943, which is consistent with when VMF 214 existed (8/43 to 1/44).
1) The USMC Aerial Evaluation form has a date of 5/10/42. This is not consistent with the previously seen calendar board.
2) The squadron throws a surprise birthday party for Major Boyington at the end of the episode. Boyington's birthday is not in May, it is in December (12/4/1912).

During the initial AERIAL evaluation, the instructor is writing on a score sheet. Handwritten entries at the top of the sheet include the squadron (VMF-214) and the date. The date is written in as May 10, 1943. The Black Sheep were formed in AUGUST of 1943 and didn't fly their first combat mission until SEPTEMBER 14th.

The nurses that are seen rubbing elbows with the guests on Vella La Cava (and are credited at the end of the show as Nurse #1, Nurse #2 and Nurse #3) show up in the next episode as full fledged co-stars....Denise DuBarry as Nurse Samantha Greene and various 'actresses' as Pappy's Lambs.

The year has to be at least 1942, as the original VMF-214 squadron formed during July 1942. More likely the episode represents WWII during or after August 1943, which is when Pappy Boyington took command.

Goof: There are two goofs in this episode. The Universal Newsreel copyright is 1939 (MCMXXXIX) when the year has to be at least 1942 if not the more likely 1943. Second the lead-in caption says "YMF 214 Top Combat Squadron," when the real name of the unit is VMF 214. The announcer uses the correct unit name.

Goof: The beginning newsreel footage, which is suppose to be current, has a 1939 (MCMXXXIX) copyright date. The episode's time frame is at least 1942, instead of 1939 (which is before the USA entered WWII).

During the flashback scene where Patterson is killed, he calls himself 'Pat': "Ol Pat Patterson will show 'em how it's done." He then dives off and is killed by the enemy. In the scene before where He and Pappy are in the officers club, Pappy occasions to talk to Patterson and remember how it was back in China. He calls him 'Dave' Patterson, not Pat. "It's good to have an experienced pilot in here, good work, Dave."
