    Trivia, Notes, Quotes and Allusions

    FILTER BY TYPE

    • TRIVIA (2)

      • Rik Mayall (better known in the series as Lord Flashheart) makes his first appearance in the series in this episode as 'Mad Gerald'.

      • The cold opening of "The Foretelling" says Richard IV reigned from 1485 to 1498. This episode starts in 1498, but Edmund is stuck in a cell for an entire year and Richard IV is still on the throne.

    • QUOTES (4)

      • The Hack: God save the King.
The Band: Cause no one else will.

      • Edmund: Why? Because, Percy, far from being a fit consort for the Prince of the Realm, you would bore the leggings off the village idiot. You ride a horse rather less well than another horse would. Your brain would make a grain of sand look large and ungainly and the part of that can't be mentioned, I am reliably informed by the women of the Court, wouldn't be worth mentioning even if it could be. If you put on a floppy hat and a funny cod-piece, you might just get by as a fool, but since you wouldn't know a joke if it got up and gave you a haircut, I doubt it. That's why you're dismissed.
        Percy: Oh, I see.
Edmund: And as for you, Baldrick.
        Baldrick: You're out too.
        Baldrick: Fair enough.

      • Prince Edmund: (weakly) Harry...what are my chances?
        Harry: Oh, very good.
        Queen Gertrud: He will live?
Harry: Living? Oh, I thought you meant of going to heaven.
        Prince Edmund: (weakly) Damn.

      • Richard IV: The Black Dagger!
        Prince Edmund: (meekly) Black Adder!

    • NOTES (1)

    • ALLUSIONS (2)

      • Edmund: All for one.
The Band: And each one for himself.

This is a play on a very famous motto of the musketeers in Alexandre Dumas's book: Three Musketeers.
The original text is Unus pro omnibus, omnes pro uno in Latin, which meana One for all and all for one.

      • Edmund: We few, we happy few, we band of ruthless bastards!

This line when Edmund is drinking with the other members of the Black Seal is a play on the famous speech from Shakespeare's "Henry V" which starts off with: 'We few, we happy few, we band of brothers.'
