Episode Summary

Gan's limiter (a brain implant designed to control his violent nature) malfunctions, and Liberator's crew has to take him to space station XK-72 to have it repaired, although they know there is a risk of being discovered. But XK-72 lies beyond a dangerous region of space, and its inhabitants may not be sympathetic.moreless

  • The best episode so far.

This episode is the best so far, mainly because it feels like a stage play, leaving out the "location work" that can be very cheesy if the budget is limited. It has a richness of themes and motifs that keep you interested. There is "one for all" motif, with everyone risking their lives for Gan, a character that had been underused before. Next you have that staple of sci-fi, the rebellious computer. Once Gan escapes, there is "a monster loose on the ship". When they reach the space lab, we enter Casablanca, the neutral area in a space conflict, where ambition and treason rear their ugly heads. It gives Avon another moral dilemma, which is sort of solved for him by the arrival of the Federation fighters. All of this in fifty minutes.moreless

Trivia, Notes, Quotes and Allusions

  • TRIVIA (5)

    • Incorrectly Regarded as a Goof: Blake tells Jenna to leave XK72 and the ship begins to back away. On Liberator's screen, the ship then appears to move forward and to the right of the station. Another space shot shows Liberator again backing off from the station in the opposite direction. After the Liberator begins to back away, Jenna order lateral thrust, which turn the ship around.

    • Mistake: When Avon calls for teleport, Cally can be seen vaguely reflected in a wall, waiting for her cue to step out.

    • Mistake: Just before Blake comes into the computer room to help Avon, his arm can be seen in the corridor outside, waiting for his cue.

    • Mistake: Zen refers to Liberator encountering meteorites, but meteorites occur in the atmosphere of Earth and not in space. What Zen means is asteroids.

    • Mistake: When Blake teleports down to the station to collect Kayn, he takes two bracelets with him for the return trip, one for Kayn and one for himself. When Avon teleports down, he takes only one bracelet, but later he manages to send Renor to the Liberator and then return himself - without a second bracelet.

  • QUOTES (11)

    • Renor: {To Kane} You call yourself a doctor?
Vila: No. He calls himself a genius. {Points a gun at Kane} All right, genius, time's up.
Kane: I wondered how long it would take you.
Vila: Well, you can stop wondering and start operating.
Kane: Why didn't Blake come himself?
Vila: Blake doesn't know anything about it. I thought it was better that way. He's got a conscience. He might not be prepared to kill you.
      Kane: And you are?
      Vila: Yes.
Avon: If he isn't, I am.

    • Blake: How soon will you complete?
      Kane: Thirty-five minutes.
      Blake: Do it in twenty.
      Kane: Or you'll kill me?
Blake: Oh, no no no. In twenty-five minutes, I'm returning you to your station. If you haven't completed your work...
Kane: Your threats don't bother me in the least, you know.
Blake: ...I shall destroy your hands. Twenty minutes.

    • Jenna: Maybe Zen's got it wrong.
Avon: Zen hasn't got it at all.
Jenna: All right, then whoever programmed him.
Avon: One of these days, I intend to find out who that is.
Vila: If you live that long.

    • Avon: Staying with you requires a degree of stupidity of which I no longer feel capable.
Blake: Now you're just being modest.

    • Vila: Ah. Jenna, this is Professor Kayn's assistant, his name is-
Renor: Renor. And I had a feeling this was going to be a good day.
Jenna: Yes, well, don't let your feelings run away with you.
Renor: Oh, a sense of humour, too. I love girls with a sense of humour.
Jenna: Yes, I can see where that would be an advantage. This way, please.
Renor: Do you believe in love at first sight, Jenna?
      Jenna: Not yet.

    • Avon: Why do you stay with Blake?
      Vila: I like him.
Avon: That isn't a good enough reason.
Vila: It is for me. That and the fact I've got nowhere else to go.

    • Blake: Hmm. Well, presumably Zen will come back to us when we're out of danger.
Vila: Sounds like a good idea. Any chance of joining him?

    • Vila: Now, wait a minute. If it's too difficult for Zen to tackle, what chance have we got?
      Jenna: Gan is dying.
Vila: All right. Well, let's get on with it!

    • Blake: Zen. Set navigation computers for direct route to space laboratory X K seventy two. Speed standard by six.
      Zen: Rejected.
Avon: You cannot reject a direct command.
      Blake: Justify that rejection, please.
Zen: Your command reduces to an order to self-destruct. This runs counter to Prime Directive.
Vila: Zen obviously believes there's something nasty in that zone.
Avon: It has no data. It is acting upon an instruction, an order not to enter the zone.
Blake: Then we'll go on manual.

    • Kayn: It's Blake and his crew.
Renor: The Blake? How do you know?
      Kayn: They lie badly.
Renor: Stannis! That's who she is! Jenna Stannis. I've never met a celebrity before.
Kayn: Celebrity! These people are maniacs, killers.
      Renor: Oh, come on.
      Kayn: Mindless destroyers.
      Renor: You don't know that.
Kayn: They are destroying the greatest force for order in the known universe.
Renor: Order? Well, you've had a change of heart, haven't you? I'm sure poor old Farron would be delighted with your new concern for the rules.
Kayn: Farron is a bureaucratic fool. I'm talking about stability, Renor, stability. With no stability there is no progress.
Renor: Progress to what? Brain implantation?
      Kayn: A dangerous psychopath? Certainly.

    • Jenna: Kayn is supposed to be a genius.
Vila: The trouble with a genius is you're never too sure what he's up to.
