I was just on here reminiscing and thought I would look at the Paul Darrow segment & there is a great quotation from him comparing Firefly to Blake's 7.
Thank you! I submitted it, because I thought it is very fitting, and I like the fact that Paul seems to be a fan of Serenity.

I couldn't agree more. I too love Firefly, and I seem to remember Joss Whedon mention that he watched Blake's 7 when he was in the UK many years ago. Blake's 7 is definitely one of the first gritty sci-fi series, if not the first, without all the "we're living in a perfect world" stuff where the main characters are too good to be true, like say in Star Trek. It's not all black and white, it's rather grey, and I think that was very unusual for a tv show back in the late 70s/ early 80s.

The comparison occured to me when I saw an online poll (http://quizfarm.com/test.php?q_id=111863) asking "which scifi crew would best suit you?" Mine came up as Serenity. I was annoyed that the Liberator wasn't on the list until I realized they sampled the same demographic -- independent types with a strong distrust of authority.
The comparisons are very strong. You have the idyllic but oppressive government contrasted with the gritty but freer outsiders. Governments that abuse their power. Characters who are flawed and fractured. Blake's 7 also ventured into arc-based story-telling with the Star One plotline.
The show was WAY ahead of its time. A lot of people rag on it because of the low budget and cheap FX. But, like Doctor Who, it transcends its production values with good writing and outstanding acting.
Blake's 7 was also a big influence on Babylon 5, incidentally. I remember Strazcynski saying specifically that one of the characters in "Crusade" was based somewhat on Avon.

As soon as I saw the Firefly pilot I thought Joss Whedon's been watching Blake's 7 (& reading wild west stories). Many think Firefly is taken from Cowboy Bebop but I say Blake's 7 is the more obvious influence.

I'm with you all on this. Blake's 7, farscape, and firefly seem to all have such close similarities. Makes me question why i thought farscape and lexx were similar.

I only saw a few back in the 80's but from what I remember I can see how the 2 shows are a lot alike and much different from most of the other sci-fi shows.
