The scientist Egrorian offers Avon a powerful weapon, the Tachyon Funnel, in exchange for Orac. Servalan, who is behind the transfer, prepares a plan to double-cross Avon that would give her both the Tachyon Funnel and Orac.

  • Avon and Vila in a classic two-hander aboard a doomed space shuttle.

    While the fourth season may, in many respects, have been a season too far, this ranks as my all-time favourite episode. Quite apart from an excellent performance by John Savident as the grotesque Egrorian, the episode focuses on the characters of, and relationships between, Avon and Vila. Trapped on a space shuttle that cannot break orbit, the two men strip the ship of all non-essential items to prevent it crashing back to the planet, but it is still too heavy. How much does Vila weigh? Robert Holmes brilliantly captures the essential nature of the series mainstays, and the interplay between them is superb. The scenes aboard the shuttle are full of tension, and by the time we make that leap of imagination and suspect that Avon might indeed throw Vila from the airlock, we realise that he has already gone into hiding! The situation exposes how uneasy is the relationship that we had thought secured over the past few seasons.moreless

And my golden-haired stripling became a silver-haired dotard. Sad, isn't it? But then one... one has to face such hazards when exploring new frontiers.

    • Soolin: Tell us about the laws of parallel physics, Vila! Vila: Soolin, the only thing you ever grasped was a gun! Do you want to get brain damage? Soolin: The way I see it, if you can understand parallel physics, anyone can. Vila: Unlike some people around here, I don't boast about my abilities. I keep them hidden. Dayna: You certainly do.
