  • Pure action, literally.

    8.5
The first of many Bleach episodes with Ichigo fighting a strategical one on one battle with someone really strong. Just about this whole episode was Ichigo fighting with either Renji or Urahara. Although the fights were aesthetically pleasing, what made them more fun to watch was its incorporation of tactics and a fighting structure. The whole continuous attacking thing and its similarity to a revolver was pretty interesting. Although what is pretty disappointing is that it sort of ended in a deus ex mechanica, but not entirely as half of the episode with Ichigo fighting Urahara justified that deus ex mechanica.moreless
  • Ichigo vs. Renji continues. After releasing Zabimaru, the power difference is evident. While Renji tries to figure a way to finish the fight with an increasingly stubborn foe, Ichigo tries to find the answers to beating Renji by remembering his training.moreless

    9.9
The conclusion of one of the best fights of the series in my opinion. After gaining control of the fight after releasing his Zanpakuto, Renji has a difficult time finishing off a very stubborn Ichigo, who is doing his best to stay alive. After being pushed to his limits, Ichigo remembers his training and turns the table on Renji with his new found resolve. The end of this battle is just the beginning of the war to save Rukia for Ichigo and company, with many more, and far more dangerous battles lying ahead. After his defeat, Renji has some soul searching to do and will have to decide if he was even fighting the right battle to begin with.moreless
  • fight between ichigo and rengi

    9.5
might warn you, i kinda give away the ending to this episode (but not in detail) even so its kinda obvious as its a common twist thing for TV.

we get some new insight as to ichigo's training with 'sandel-hat' as hes affectionally called. and learn that ichigo has more control ovr his spirit power then before.

the director must be a fan of Dragonball Z, becasue the fight between rengi and ichigo followed a similar battle plot that almost all DBZ fights followed. (not flying or anything, a 'battle-storyline'

-enemies meet, compare power levels. then boast about power levels (spirit power)

-begin to fight, good guy gets beaten up

-spectator amazed at him still standing after the attack

-good guy gets more of a beating

-good guy powers up!, good guy wins

very obvious, other then that the animation and use of music is still top-notch as it always is though out the seriesmoreless

    • Ganju: Ichigo... you're hurt!
      Hanataro: Are you alright?
Ichigo: Yeah. It's nothin' for you to worry about.
Hanataro: That's amazing. I can't believe it! How does he still remain standing in the condition that he's in?
Ichigo: (thinking) Damn! My vision's gettin' blurry. And my legs won't stop shaking. Quit shakin', dammit!
Renji: Heh. You talk big... but it seems that standing is about all you can manage to do right now.

    • Renji: You stubborn fool! You really wanna save her that much?
Ichigo: You idiot! No, not want, I will!
Renji: (glares) Don't mess with me! (attacks) Don't you understand Rukia was condemned to die!? And that's because you stole her powers! Don't you get it, Ichigo!? It's all your fault! It's your fault that Rukia is going to die!
Ichigo: (blocks attack) You think I don't know that? That's the reason why... I will save her!

    • Urahara: I'm so disappointed, Ichigo. So very disappointed. Sadly, your sword exhibits only fear. And when you counter, it's because you fear being killed. When you attack, you fear killing, and when you try to protect someone, you fear you could let them die. At this point, the only thing that your sword speaks of... is senseless fright. And that's not good. What you do not need in battle... is fear. Nothing will come of it. When you counter, you don't let them cut you. If you protect someone, you don't let them die. When you attack, you kill. Understand?

    • Renji: (thinking about Ichigo) What's with him all of the sudden? Was he like this the last time? No... it's different. That time he was just radiating spirit energy at random. This time, it's calm and controlled... and without a doubt, it's much stronger.
