This is one of those episodes where probably nobody blinked at the time, but in hindsight, has a pretty off message.

The school hottie asks Blossom if she has a date for the dance, and would she like to go. He doesn't specifically say 'do you want to go with me', and when Blossom says yes, she would like to go, he pulls in a geeky, awkward guy who has been bribed to do his homework by setting up this 'date'.

Now, let's be clear - Blossom didn't say she'd go with this guy, she had no idea he was being asked for. She would be well within her rights to say 'no, I don't want to go out with you, this isn't what I was agreeing to.

But the implication is that because she has said she doesn't have a date and would like to go to the dance, she now *has* to follow through, having been 'tricked into saying yes'.

But she didn't say yes. She never said yes.

Cue the rest of the episode with Blossom trying to get out of the date, then feeling guilty for lying, then getting shot down and made to feel even worse when she tries to do the 'right thing' and offer to go with the guy anyway, only to be told he asked someone else, with extra helping of guilt trip.

The episode made me uncomfortable on so many levels. No one ever said 'you don't have to go, you never said She was made to feel worthless because she didn't want to spend time with someone so insecure that he couldn't straight out ask her, but had to bribe another student with cheating to manipulate her into a situation where she felt she had to go. And when she did what *she* wanted, and (ineptly, admittedly) tried to soften her rejection by not bluntly saying 'I don't want to go out with you'. giving a face-saving lie instead (not my preferred option, btw, but something women are conditioned to do) his response was to emotionally punish her with a loaded guilt trip.

The message was intended to be 'lying to people is bad and hurts their feelings'. The message that was there so much more strongly, though, was 'girls, it's better to do something you really don't want to do than embarrass a boy or bruise his ego; boys, manipulating women into a position where they feel obliged to say yes to what you want even if they don't want to is fine, and if they say no, you have every right to be offended, outraged, and make them feel as guilty as all

Anthony: Anything you want to talk about?
      Blossom: You'll think I'm terrible.
Anthony: Blossom, eight months ago, I was so high that the cops found me at 3 AM, trying to order a Big Mac and fries from an automatic teller machine. I'm not gonna throw any stones.

    • Nick: How you doing, Blossom?
Blossom: Not so hot. I need your advice on a little dating matter.
Nick: One's dating, one's driving. I'm in Daddy Hell!

    • Nick: I've really got to get to work, but we can talk about this tomorrow, okay?
Blossom: Okay, Dad, but Fred really is a nerd.
Nick: Great. I like nerds. They're sexually inhibited and usually make good drivers.
