  • That keeps the heartrate going. Episode recap & thoughts.

    9.5
    Recap:

    [Main Plot]

After he meets some friends for dinner the Commissioner gets shot. His protection detail rushes in but can only get the make of the car.

Luckily his injuries aren't severe and he is able to leave the hospital soon after.

At the precinct Danny wants to investigate the case but is told not to. With the help of Jackie he manages to get involved in the investigation (because she can speak spanish and is send to interview a witness).

As it turns out the hit was ordered by the sons of Whitey Brennan, a gang boss Frank knew. Back in 70s when his team was arresting him things went south and four of Brennan's people were killed, including his wife and infant grandson. Seeing that their father was dying his sons thought the only (best?) way to honor him would be to kill the commissioner.

    [Thoughts]

The recap makes this episode sound really short. But it was exciting throughout the entire case Danny was working. This week instead of a family meeting for sunday dinner we saw the Reagan's at the hospital and later the whole family at the ceremony where the Atrium of a College was dedicated to the memory of Joe.

The last six or so minutes literally kept me on the edge of my seat right before Danny and Jamie caught Rory Brennan and disarmed him, with Frank standing in front of the audience, looking stoic and continuing his speech as if nothing was going on in the background.

I loved the family dynamic and thought it was interesting to see how far Danny was willing to go to catch the person responsible for the attempt on his father's life. The look on his face when Jackie entered the hospital room was downright frightening.

The only reason this doesn't get a '10' is because it is a complete stand-alone-episode and I am just too curious to find out more about why Joe really died.moreless
  • An assassination attempt on the life of P.C. Frank Reagan brings an ancient family grudge to new light.

This episode is BLUE BLOODS at it's best. The writing was great, the story perfectly balanced the family drama with the procedural case. Tom Selleck and Donnie Wahlberg gave their best performances of the season. I also loved the visual look of the show: rich locations; excellent cinematography, and great shot design,

Uniformly exceptional performances from the guest cast (especially Mark Margolis as Whitey Brennan) raised the level of the episode even higher. Remarkable to see feature quality actors like Patricia Kalember (SISTERS,) Otto Sanchez (OZ) and John Bedford Lloyd (JOHN ADAMS) in one-scene cameos.

Brilliantly directed -- top notch episode!moreless
