I have a concern with how bullying is being portrayed as the cause of many suicides, especially kids/teens. I understand the risk of me saying this is that it sounds as if I am defending bullying, which I am not. But there are several risks of associating a causal link between bullying and suicide.

*It excludes other factors such as preexisting mental health issues in the deceased.
*As highlighted in this story, it leaves out the possibility to humanize the bully and explore the option of finding help for him/her as well.
*Linking bullying to suicide offers the facade of a clear "reason" why suicide happens, when in reality no one issue causes suicide. In many of the stories I have read about suicides associated with bullying, including the young lady mentioned in this story, they do not mention anything about other risk factors that may have been at play.
*Research shows that bullying is actually only associated with suicidality for kids who were already at risk of suicidal struggles.
*The vast majority of youths who are bullied do not attempt or complete suicide.

The topic of bullying and its link to suicide is big in the media these days. It, bullying, provides an easy explanation, albeit incomplete explanation, of something so unimaginable such as suicide. Research shows that bullying is an increased risk factor for people who were already at risk for suicide.
