The series seems to have got a patch of the shakes at around this point. Although by no means amongst the show's worst episodes, and maybe better than the previous couple of stories, 'Gun Crazy' isn't particularly outstanding.

The plot is fair I suppose, but I found it a bit all over the place and too unfocused. We get the rather deranged ex-cop ranting and raving, and he is the obvious suspect, but all along we pretty much know that the male co-worker at the gun shop with an unrequited crush on the boss's daughter is behind it. It is made so obvious from the start. But it takes so long to get to this "revelation".

The hostage sequence between the ex-officer and Tom, in Tom's office, is good, and although I can appreciate that it was thrown in to add another element and another suspect to the story, I felt that it was over too quickly, and in many ways deserved an episode of it's own to be fully fleshed out.

Don't get me wrong, this episode isn't terrible, not at all. As always, we get some nice character moments, and at this phase, even the weaker 'Blue Heelers' stories are still pleasant to watch. But this one just feels a bit by-the-numbers to me, and ultimately not all that memorable. I'll give it a decent 8 out of 10 based on it's merits, but considering that much of the second season scores up in the 9s and 10s from me, 8 isn't particularly outstanding.moreless

    • Goof - After Francis Powell is shot by Wayne, the Heelers check his details on the Police Database. The database shows that when Powell was an employee of New South Wales Police his Date of Birth was 16th October 1952. Later in the episode when Powell is returned to the station after leaving hospital, Maggie photographs him for his mugshot. At the foot of the mugshot display it reveals his Date of Birth to be 12th April 1955.
