Bad me! More than a couple of years ago now, I started watching 'Blue Heelers' on DVD (not even available here in the UK, I have purchase them on a leading auction site and have them shipped in!) with the intention of reviewing each episode as I go through. Well, as life and other things got in the way (and I'll confess, being distracted by a couple of other shows), that ground to a halt. But over the last few months I've resumed watching the series; I'll fill in the blanks of the episodes I haven't covered yet later, but this notable episode seems a good place to resume for now.
This is a key, top-notch episode of the series. Nell's death in a car crash the circumstances of which the Heelers must deduct sends shock waves right through the local community.
All of the main cast are on form in this one, particularly Lisa McCune it's not often that we see Maggie lose her composure when in uniform, but at the scene of the crash she is close to tears. But the star of the story is John Wood, portraying widowed Tom's shock and numbness perfectly.
I particularly like how we only see Nell's hand, when Tom holds it in the mortuary and just a brief glimpse of her left eye in the final scene; Nell was much mentioned but never seen in the series, and this episode rounds that off perfectly.
Also worth noting is that this is the first time we see Tom's daughter Susan (Beth Buchanan), who would be interwoven into a number of future plots in the series.
One of the scenes near end, were Nick comes to console Tom (Nick lost his own family in a road accident), is terrifically acted, and it's good to see William McInnes have something to get his teeth into, as some other script seem to push Nick into the background slightly.
Anyone (especially non-Australian) who thinks 'Blue Heelers' to be just some run-of-the-mill, maybe slightly trashy Aussie cop show should be pointed in the direction of this fine episode. 10/10moreless
