'Mates' is an archetypal 'Blue Heelers' episode you can immerse yourself in it for an hour, make up your own mind about the guest characters and try to decide who the real villain is. It's not a series classic, it doesn't particularly stand out against some of the series greats, but it's a perfectly decent episode in its own right.
As Alex Bailey, Peter Hosking isn't quite one of BH's classic 'guest characters' but he does the job well enough.
From the off, I guessed that Gordon Hendrix, new husband / father to Alex's old family, was the true criminal. It was still fun seeing how it all unravelled though.
It was really nice to see Chris brought to the forefront of this episode, as the character had had relatively little to do for quite a while.
Adam does not appear in this episode; he is not even referred to, which seems a little odd seeing as it comes in the middle of his HIV-scare storyline.
All-in-all, it probably won't be remembered as a golden 'Blue Heelers' outing, but it's a solid enough episode to pass an hour with. 9 / 10.moreless
